More 'Spectacular' Attacks in Iraq Inevitable-UK
By Andrew Cawthorne

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's envoy to Iraq warned on Friday further massive suicide attacks were inevitable and recommended NATO (news - web sites) take a peacekeeping role there in 2004.

In a talk at a London think-tank, Jeremy Greenstock also called for a lead role for the United Nations -- sidelined during the U.S.-led and British-backed war -- in elections to a sovereign Iraqi government scheduled for 2005.

The British official said 2004 would continue to be "quite difficult" in terms of the political management of the country, lack of unity among Iraqis, and anti-occupation violence.

"The incidents are going to continue. Some of them will be large and, I am afraid, spectacular," he said in reference to this year's string of car bombs and attacks on occupying forces.

"I have not got a message of comfort in those terms for the British public," Greenstock added.

"We will...see a good deal of continuing violence."

1. It's easier to win the war than to win the peace
Maybe * should have thought of that before the war started.

2. When you compare Tuesday's bombing of 1000 pounds of explosives
to 1983 Beruit's 12,000 pounds of TNT, the attacks in Iraq haven't been all that "spectacular" so far, despite our nearly 500 dead and well over 1,000 wounded. Granted, "spectacular" will come, and sadly, we will have clowns in leadership roles when it happens.

The year 2004 will not be a pleasant one.
