Cheney to hunt at Rolling Rock (Today-Scene of Pheasant/Duck Massacre)
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/tribunereview/news/westmoreland/s_487539.html

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to arrive in Westmoreland County this morning for a day of hunting at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township, a White House spokeswoman said Sunday.

Cheney will land this morning at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport near Latrobe and travel by motorcade to the private club, where he will join unidentified hunting companions, Cheney spokeswoman Lee Anne McBride said.

McBride said he will do his morning briefing in Washington, D.C., before flying to Western Pennsylvania.

McBride said Cheney will not participate in any public events while in the county and will return to the capital this evening.

An avid hunter, Cheney is no stranger to Rolling Rock. He has made several trips to the club since 2002. During a 2003 trip to Rolling Rock, he bagged more than 70 pheasants and mallard ducks.

TREMENDOUS fun! What kind of creep has to kill 70 pheasants in an outing? (tho I'm sure he's picturing 'peasants')

8. hate to burst your bubble miss erika,
but in these hunting *clubs* as a rule the birds aren't flushed out of anything. they are in fact, shaken or in some cases actually grabbbed from the cage and thrown out. it's real sport for real men. in the same sort of way dousing cats w/ gasoline and putting a match to emto see how fast they can run is great wholesome fun. it's about the same level of cruelty. it's certainly the same level of sport.

as someon who used to hunt, and would again if health allowed, what i don't get is that for me and the hunters i know, at least half the joy of the hunt is watching the dogs work. it's such a grand sight to see some well trained dogs who love what they're doing out in the field working for the scent and the honing in on, sighting and flushing the birds. i don't understand, at all, the draw of driving up to a spot in the road and having someone shovel birds with clipped wings twenty feet in front of me so i can kill some helpless creature. and then hafta pick birdshot out of it when i eat it? hell, i'd rather just wring it's neck. or just stay home.

43. I live in the same town as the two-headed calf, and there is a place
not far from where I live that a couple men own that the big wealthy Nascar drivers, celebrities (unnamed), Country Music Stars, etc. LOVE to go hunting for deer, boar, duck, turkey, bear, etc. One catch though . . . these animals are practically hand fed until the hunters come. It's not just the politicians, it appears to be those with wealth and not enough time to have to really hunt, track, work for the kill of an animal they will never eat.

Hunting, IMO, for live animals I hate it as a sport. If you are killing an animal to feed your family, that's another thing, but just for the sport so you get a pelt, a stuffed head on your wall or a bird that a taxidermist prepares for a hunter to mount on their wall at home or office, it just doesn't seem right to me.

However, the lowest of the low go to the hunting clubs where the animals have no fear of humans. After all, the humans feed them and feed them well . . . why should they be scared of a human.

Now the two-headed calf is pathetic. It's mouth is like a cleft lip and palate deformity some babies are born with but with two tongues. They have to be tube fed until surgery because they cannot nurse the majority of the time.

Kirk is tube feeding it for now, but they have called Virginia Tech to take the animal to study and care for it because he has a really big dairy farm and this one calf takes up a lot of his time. And there is no way Laura (his wife) would feed this calf. She was first runner up for Mrs. Virginia about ten years ago, so I know she doesn't fool with any of the cows. Problem is, Virginia Tech is one of the few Veterinary schools in the nation and they use animals like this to study. They would not care for that calf by tube feeding it all its life. It's a shame it wasn't born already dead because either way, there is not going to be a happy ending for this calf unless there is some surgery they could do to make it able to feed on its own. It's really sad. I think Ripley's has come down and done a story on it.

I'm sure after it's dead, the bidding will begin (sad).

21. That's just sick!
I remember when I was a little girl of about 6 years old living in rural South Dakota (all but Sioux Falls and Rapid City can be considered "rural" - LOL) ... my dad, my two brothers, and our mixed breed dog "Friend" returned home late in the day with TWO Pheasants after a full day of hunting. We were still PLEASED. I helped them meticulously clean and gut the birds. We cooked them the next night. BTW - Pheasant, IMO, is the most delicious game bird. Yummmy! ;)

For the life of me, I don't understand what sense of accomplishment these spoiled wealthy or corporate men and women derive from shooting birds that are "set-up" for you. Even the thought disgusts me. They have no conscious ... no shame. I doubt if Cheney's family ate any of those 70 Pheasants or Mallard Ducks that he shot last year. What a waste.

Shoots tame birds, flushed out of a cage.

The birds are probably drugged as well, to make sure the big dick gets his limit.

7. The birds aren't drugged, but it is their first flight (and their last)
They take 'em right out of the coop, put them in a pen in the back of a truck, drive for a few miles over rough country, take the birds and shove them headfirst into the bush.

They fly up wondering what the heck to do and you just shoot them.

Pretty much sucks.

If this human slug wants to shoot & kill for kicks, he should get his fat ass to the Middle East and quit using helpless animals as proxy.

15. Report from 2003 "Hunt"
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 03:04 AM by RamboLiberal
Dick Cheney is under fire for shooting birds. The Vice President has come under attack from an animal rights group for participating in a “canned hunt” in which he reportedly killed pheasants that were released for the purpose of being shot by hunters.

The increasingly low-profile V.P. was taken to Pittsburgh by Air Force Two earlier this week where his “security detail loaded him and his favorite shotgun into a Humvee,” and went to Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There, he and nine other hunting buddies shot at 500 ringneck pheasants, killing 417 of them. The V.P. was credited with offing 70 of the birds, as well as an unknown number of mallard ducks.

The shooting spree prompted an outraged letter from the Humane Society. “This wasn't a hunting ground. It was an open-air abattoir, and the vice president should be ashamed to have patronized this operation and then slaughtered so many animals," Wayne Pacelle, a senior vice president of The Humane Society of the United States, wrote in a letter of protest, according to ThePittsburghChannel.com. “If the Vice President and his friends wanted to sharpen their shooting skills, they could have shot skeet or clay, not resorted to the slaughter of more than 400 creatures planted right in front of them as animated targets.”

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3675813/

<snip>

Details of the exact nature of the hunt were also hard to come by. Officers at the private Rolling Rock Club, which meanders over 10,000 acres in Ligonier Township about a 90-minute drive from Pittsburgh, did not return numerous calls seeking comment. Employees reached in the club's dog kennels said they had been ordered not to speak to the news media. The employees added that they did not know what had become of Scott Wakefield, a dog handler at the club who was quoted by The Post-Gazette as saying that 500 birds had been released from nets for the hunt.

If nets were used, bird-hunting experts said, Mr. Cheney and his party were probably prepositioned with shotguns on the ground or in blinds in trees. Another possibility was that the birds were released from a tower, with Mr. Cheney and the others ready for them on the ground. A final possibility was that the pheasants were released early in the day or the night before, and Mr. Cheney and his companions then went after them on foot.

Whatever the case, hunters generally do not embrace any form of the practice as a substitute for the real thing.

"I don't see anything terribly wrong with it, but I don't think it should be confused with hunting," said Sid Evans, editor in chief of the outdoor magazine Field & Stream. Shooting pen-raised birds, he said, "is a great way to train dogs, and it's a great way to educate young hunters."

Mr. Cheney often hunts in the wild, and his office would not discuss how frequently he shoots pen-raised birds at private clubs. The Post-Gazette reported, however, that Monday's trip was the second time Mr. Cheney had visited Rolling Rock. The newspaper also said Mr. Cheney had spent Monday afternoon at the club shooting an undetermined number of mallard ducks.

who actually track the birds through open terrain, our limit was FOUR.

It sickens me that a true HUNTER would get ANY pleasure from this figurative "shooting fish in a barrel" type bird killing? <shrug> Where's the sport?

.... what Cheney does is not hunting it is killing. 70 pheasants in the AM and then
ducks in the afternoon? Why doesn't he just go to a slaughter house and kill
livestock all day?

BTW When he shot the guy in the face he was using a $28,000 shotgun.
