Channel 4 imagines Blair on trial for war crimes (and * in Rehab)

Channel 4 television has unveiled details of its new satirical drama in which Prime Minister Tony Blair faces war crimes charges over the Iraq conflict in an imagined, not-too-distant future.

"The Trial of Tony Blair" is set in 2010 and sees Blair (actor Robert Lindsay) on the brink of extradition to a war crimes tribunal, plagued by nightmares about the war and fears that he will be killed by a suicide bomber.

In the programme, to be screened next week, Blair converts to his wife Cherie's faith, Catholicism, in a bid to seek forgiveness for his sins.

"I gather Mr Blair is very concerned about his place in history. This film is my idea of where that place might be. Whether it's fiction or prediction remains to be seen," writer Alistair Beaton said.

"If it contributes to the public perception that Blair has done something wrong and he needs to pay a price for that, that would be terrific."

Meanwhile in the fiction, former US president George W Bush is shown in rehab after being discovered comatose at his ranch.

Any chance this could end up on a DVD for those of us not in UK?

2. Yeah but it's not all wine and roses
"Blair is convinced he will be offered a top job at the United Nations or in the US administration as an adviser to new president Hillary Clinton."

7. He's already played him once
in "A Very Social Secretary", about David Blunkett's affair, by the same author - he was quite good. As well as Citizen Smith, it also has a link to his portrayal of the Michael Murray character in 'GBH' (who had something of Derek Hatton in him).

5. The Ranch?
Would that be the one in Texas or South America? I can see shrub living in exile somewhere like Parone or Salinas. If Argintina took Mengele, they shouldn't have too much of a problem with a tin pan would be dictator of the world. I hope he dies there, an abandonded drunk, drowning in his own vomit.

Works for me.

Problem would be that it would be PAL format - we can't overcome that. I know that computers are effectively multiregion and I can play NTSC on mine as well as the TV but could you replay PAL ?

Maybe some kind soul will upload the whole lot onto Youtube in sections. Other than that it may infact be made viewable on the web through our equivalent of Informationclearinghouse.

in format used in U.S. and sell in the states. Bet there would be quite a few of us who might rent or buy it! I know I would.

Or perhaps it could be distributed in Indy Theaters.

13. I'm e-mailing a friend in London right now!
I know there's a place here in town that can convert UK to North American video formats.

14. No real need...
There's a lot of DVD players out there that can be hacked to be "region-free". I use the Cyberhome DVD-300 (about $30 from Best Buy) to play all my PAL DVDs with no problem.

15. she has a VCR, and can't record onto DVDs ...
... So if she agrees to tape this for me, I guess I'd have to deal with the tape formats thing anyway.

16. Meltdown...
Looking forward to this. There's a good interview with the writer & producer of this drama over at the Guardian.

Very pleased to see that Gordon Brown is being played by the superb actor (and indeed writer/director) Peter Mullan.
