Bush's Approval Rating Hits New Low

By NANCY BENAC
The Associated Press
Friday, January 12, 2007; 3:45 AM

WASHINGTON -- Public approval of Congress has edged up a bit now that Democrats
are back in control, but it's still nothing to write home about. Approval for the way
Congress is handling its job rose to 32 percent in the latest AP-Ipsos poll, up from
a meager 27 percent a month earlier. That puts Congress on par with President Bush,
whose 32 percent approval rating represents a new low for him in AP-Ipsos polling.

The Democrats, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry
Reid, took control of Congress when the new session began on Jan. 4.

The softening of attitudes toward Congress suggests legislators may have an opportunity
to improve their standing in the new year, but there appears to be little opening for
Bush to move up similarly, public opinion experts believe.

-snip-

John Mueller, an Ohio State University political scientist and author of "War, Presidents
and Public Opinion," said that Bush's ratings are "basically hopeless" even if the situation
in Iraq improves, because people already feel the war's cost has been too high.

3. Timing is everything... now let's see how the poll looks AFTER
Bush's "surge" (escalation) speech & now that the Congressional Dems have actually accomplished a few of the goals they were put in office to try and do. :D

The telephone poll of 1,002 adults was conducted Monday through Wednesday and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

6. Any similarities between
* and J. Edgar Hoover are merely coincidental and not limited to their clothing and or sexual preferences.

I for one would never bring up the subject of anyone blackmailing their political opponents.

Some of these AP journalists should do stand-up. Because their bias against Democrats is so obvious.

17. Really irritating the way Congress's 5-point bounce is reported.
Not only is the 5-point bounce not highlighted as an accomplishment. It is actually used to mitigate Bush's drop to his lowest approval ever.

In a fair report, Congress should have had a paragraph of it's own, with the lead sentence being something like: "Approval of Congress rose 5% in the first days of Democratic control...". It is not fair to say that it "puts Congress on par with President Bush." If they are going to compare approval ratings, they should report the approval rating of "My Congressman" vs. Bush.

Also, they call the Congressional 5-point bounce a "softening of attitudes toward Congress." Here again, it is biased or merely inept. It is not a "softening attitude" toward Congress, it is an "increase of approval for Congress." The poll result is an "approval rating," not a "softening of attitudes" rating.
