Around 80 people gathered at City Plaza Thursday night to demonstrate against President Bush's plan to send more troops to Iraq. The protest was part of demonstrations across the nation. A new AP-Ipsos poll found approval for Bush's handling of Iraq hovering near a record low — 29 percent of Americans approve and 68 percent disapprove.

2. I love it! Profound thanks to all the protesters in Chico!
Any chance Chico could join other American cities in passing an anti-Iraq war resolution, or help pressure CA state legislatures to pass an impeachment resolution? It only states one state legislature to start impeachment proceedings in the US House. According to Jefferson's Rules, all House business must stop to consider the submission of articles of impeachment submitted by a state legislature. Efforts are underway in Illinois, Vermont, Minnesota, California and New Mexico.

See http://www.citiesforprogress.org/ - for anti-Iraq War resolutions in cities. I don't know if anyone is coordinating the state impeachment resolutions, but here's a thread on the latest (NM):

3. That's one right-wing paper
Well, at least it used to be.

I lived in Chico for a bit in the 1980s and worked for a time at the competing paper, the Chico News and Review. The E-R was the voice of the men who "owned" Chico, Oroville, and Paradise. It's a big agricultural area with a college (Chico State) sunk in the middle of it. Drives the wingnnuts crazy ... looks like it's driven the wingnuts out, or maybe sane.

Now I look at it, and on a single issue's front page, I see peace activists, reports that Enloe hospital is laying off a huge chunk of its staff, and that the local police forces are now little better than rent-a-cops.

What happened? The Chico Enterprise-Record is acting like a newspaper!

My, how times change.

4. my alma mater: CSUC
Class of 1981, B.A. in Music with history emphasis.

We called the papers the "Enterprise-Wretched" and the "Snooze and Refuse." They served best as birdcage liners. Looks like they might have improved a bit since then.

Chico: Town definitely does not get along well with Gown. Very redneck surroundings.

8. Still a right-wing paper.....
The News and Review just got bought out and is shifting right and the old editors are starting a new weekly Chico Beat. We have a liberal city council right now but not without the local developers outspending the liberal slate 3-1.

The local cops tend towards massive riot squad operations to shut down excessive drunken rioting by the right wing frat boys. Our Congresswhore Wally Herger and state representatives are secure GOP seats with no danger of Democrats winning short of sudden death.

It's a nice town surrounded by right-wing welfare queens in the form of subsidized farmers.
