Tony Snow: Notion of war preparations for Iran, Syria an 'urban legend'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- White House spokesman Tony Snow on Friday disputed what he called a "rumor or urban legend" that President Bush made comments in his speech that were aimed at preparing the way for war with Iran and Syria.

Snow, speaking to reporters at the daily White House briefing, emphatically said there are no plans for war with Iran and Syria, and that the president wasn't saying that in his Wednesday night address, which focused on a new strategy to win the war in Iraq.

"What the president was talking about is defending American forces within Iraq and also doing what we can to disrupt networks that might be trying to convey weapons into battle theaters in Iraq to kill Americans and Iraqis," Snow said.

There have been long-standing concerns over Iran's support of Shiite militants in Iraq and over Sunni insurgents crossing from Syria into Iraq to stage attacks in Anbar province and Baghdad.

19. We're already in the process of being screwed... the reason you can't feel it
even as it occurs is because the Bush/Cheney cabal members are so underendowed.:)

Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 04:17 PM by jpak
Did he threaten Iran and Syria or was my teevee on the fritz????

Did the US just send in 16 F-16s accompanied my AWACs and tankers to Turkey today???

Are they sending another carrier strike group to the region??

and an additional Patriot battalion too???

and what about that assault in Irbil and that sub collision in the Strait of Hormuz???

Were those "urban legends" too, Tony boy????

4. Sounds like it depends how you define 'war'
Raiding a diplomatic office from Iran to Kurdistan that doesn't have full consulate status yet because it was set up during the Saddam regime isn't 'war', it's arresting Iranians in Iraq who aren't protected because... they're not in a physical consulate.

6. And Shrubya's mention of Iran's nuke threat, the extra carrier group,
and the patriot batteries were just rumors too.
Or can Tony Snowjob explain how those relate to
troops on the ground in Iraq?

The idea that Iran is supporting the Sunni insurgents
in Anbar is as ludicrous as Saddam supporting al-Qaeda.

8. I don't believe a word any of them say any more. They just don't
know how to tell the truth, they're so used to lying they probably don't even notice the difference any more. I wish we could hook all of them up to polygraphs and see just how honest they are!

10. No need to issue an actual, you know, denial
It's an "urban legend" that Bush is going to invade Syria and Iran. Come on, do you really think the U.S. is going to go into Syria and Iran? Only the most paranoid, mistrustful persons would glean that meaning from the president's words. This is just more ranting from the Bush-haters.

And if you read those four sentences very carefully (or even not so carefully), none of them actually deny that Bush is planning to invade Iran or Syria or both.

12. "there are no plans for war with Iran and Syria"
Oh ah that is total bullshit. Of course there are plans. And KindofNastyRice was on the airwaves whoring up the Cambodian excuse for why we are about to start incursions into both nations. And then there was the provocation yesterday against the Iranian consulate in Kurdistan, and the naval deployments that sure look like a buildup for something, and the patriot batteries going to Baghdad. Yeah it is just an urban legend. And Mr. Snow is just an urbane liar.

13. The operative word is *attacked*
No we won't attack Iran ....unless provoked. The most likely provocation will be a staged attack on one of the dozens of warships we have in the Persian Gulf. It will likely be a submarine torpedo attack. It will be blamed on the Iranians but will have come from one of the new German built Israeli subs that are lurking in the Gulf. Very much like the Gulf of Tonkin only this time real damage will have been done. The air attacks will commence immediately with Israeli planes and US ground and sea air attacks. The Iranians will respond with attacks on whom ever allow their airspace to be used by Israel. And of course on Israel itself with missiles. The Shiites all over the Middle East will respond with waves of suicide attacks as well as short range missiles into Israel. This was all war gamed out by the US a few years ago. We lost. These are the most frightening times of my life and I was in my twenties when the Cuban missile crisis occurred. Then we had brinkmanship but the players on both side were sane. Bush and the neocons are utterly insane. God help us all. Bob

we have established that Bush is a liar, no one can believe a word that comes out of that man's mouth or his mouthpieces like Snow.

20. Bush will attack Iran. It's essential to the neocon nightmare.
Listen to William Kristol and his neocon henchmen speak and tell me that an attack on Iran isn't coming. It is, and sooner rather than later. I predict a buildup until March, then boom. It's started already. Check out ABC News, let alone Fox News. Call back Judy Miller!

I'm sure that Jamie and Adam could invent a Gitmo-style, Gonzalez-approved 'interrogation' device for Snowman and the other members of the Administration to declare this myst "Plausable" or "Busted".

Considering their aptitude with explosives and hydraulic and pneumatic actuators, this could be most entertaining and informative.
