77 rabid-dog bite cases within 20 hours in Rawalpindi (Pakistan)

77 rabid-dog bite cases within 20 hours in Rawalpindi (Pakistan)
RAWALPINDI: Biting of as many as 77 persons, majority of them children, by a rabid dog in various parts of city just within 20 hours -- from Thursday evening to Friday noon -- created a sense of fear among residents.

All the 75 dog-bite cases were reported to have registered at Rawalpindi General Hospital. Most of the victims belong to Zafar-ul-Haq Road, Tamhasapabad area and Sadiqabad, however, a few were reported from Dhoke Ilahi Baksh, Dhoke Khabba and Committee Chowk area. Nearly 50 victims were from the age group of four years to 20 years.

'The News' when contacted Deputy Medical Superintendent at RGH Dr Masood Pervez Friday morning at around half past nine, he said the RGH registered 18 dog-bite victims late Thursday evening. "Today (Friday), the RGH has received another 12 victims, all of them are school-going children belonging to Tamhasapabad and Zafar-ul-Haq Road areas."

To a question, he responded that the number of victims was swelling sharply. He said the RGH had informed the concerned officials at the city and district health departments including Chief Medical Officer early Friday morning, who are responsible for all sorts of like health issues including killing of stray dogs.

Just within another two-and-a-half hours, till 12 o'clock Friday noon, the RGH received another 40 plus victims of which 25 were school going children. The only white coloured rabid dog as told by the victims, however, could not be killed till half past twelve when the number of victims reached 75.

Islamabad, Jan 13 (DPA) Two rabid dogs bit scores of people in the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi, creating widespread panic before they could be cornered and killed, media reports said Saturday.

In separate incidents in Islamabad's twin city Friday, the sick animals set upon on a total of 77 passers-by, mainly women and children on their way to school and work.
