Richardson wants Iraq troop withdrawal this year

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The U.S. should begin pulling troops out of Iraq this year and has nothing to lose from direct talks with North Korea, Iran or Syria, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said Saturday.

"I think we have to set a deadline this year or early next year _ I think it has to be soon _ that is tied to a political solution," Richardson said. "I believe it would have a favorable impact around the world."

He said there is little worldwide support for President Bush's current policy in Iraq, which includes a troop increase in the short-term.

He said his National Guard in New Mexico is strained by deployments and he's worried about his state's needs to fight fires and deal with floods ...
