AFP: Trial of failed London bombers set to begin
Trial of failed London bombers set to begin

1 hour, 6 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) - The highly-charged trial of six men accused of a failed bid
to repeat a series of deadly bombings on London's mass transport system
in July 2005 is set to begin.

In court last year, the six denied charges of conspiracy to murder and
conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life during a bid to set
off bombs on three Underground trains and a bus on July 21, 2005.

The failed attacks came exactly two weeks after four Islamist bombers blew
themselves up on three London Underground trains and a bus, killing
themselves and 52 other people while hurting some 700 others in Britain's
worst peacetime terrorist incident.

Muktar Said Ibrahim, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, Hussain Osman, Yassin Omar, Ramzi
Mohammed and Adel Yahya -- many of them of east African origin -- are due
to stand trial at Woolwich Crown Court in the capital.

U.K. Prosecutors Outline Bomb Plot

LONDON -- Six men plotted to kill London transport passengers with bombs made
from hydrogen peroxide and flour just two weeks after suicide attackers killed
52 commuters, a British prosecutor told a jury Monday.

No one was killed in the attempted bombings on July 21, 2005, because the devices
failed to explode. Forensic scientists had tested the mixture, however, and
"in every experiment this mixture has exploded," prosecutor Nigel Sweeney said.

During jury selection last week, the judge told prospective jurors the trial "comes
after all the shock, confusion and press reporting" of attacks in July 2005, "most
particularly the death and the injuries of those who were involved in the incidents
on July 7."

He said they would be asked to decide whether the defendants intended to kill or
injure others.
