Iran offers to help train, equip Iraqi forces

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Tehran's ambassador to Baghdad said that Iran stood ready to help train and equip Iraqi security forces to combat what he called terrorism.

Speaking after talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Hassan Kazemi demanded to be shown "any shred of evidence that Iran is working to destabilise Iraq," as the United States alleges.

"Iran is disposed to helping to train and equip Iraqi security forces to combat terrorism."

Kazemi's remarks came eight days after US President George W. Bush announced he was sending 21,500 additional US troops to Iraq to help Iraqi security forces quell sectarian violence

1. The Arab world's not the same as Iraq though, not at all
Obviously the Kurds want to get along to keep their independence, and the Shiites backed by Iran during the Saddam era, like Iranian help just fine compared to US help, and just as obviously the Sunni Iraqis see a genocidal threat to themselves...

So it literally depends who you ask.

3. They already trained and equipped the Badr Brigades...
...which make up a very sizable portion of Iraq's "new army".
