Americans Celebrate Capture of Saddam (AP)

Some excerpts:

Kurds celebrated at a strip mall parking lot in Dallas, joyous over the capture but with no pity for the man they blame for hundreds of thousands of Kurdish deaths. Children stomped a flaming picture of the former dictator.
"We want to make him suffer the way he made us suffer," shouted 12-year-old Rujin Naji, wearing a scarf bearing the red, white and green of her people's flag.

...

At All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, Calif., a politically active liberal church with many members who oppose the war, the Rev. J. Edwin Bacon Jr. told parishioners he hoped the capture would speed the end of the U.S. occupation — a view shared by others.
"Our whole excuse for staying over there was (Saddam)," Julian Collins, 25, from Tallahassee, Fla.

A variety of reactions, including the wife of a deployed soldier, and someone who still wants to know where Osama is...

1. What I've seen shown...
is nothing but how great it is that Saddam is nailed, this will get the Chimp elected, dancing in the streets etc... Everyone I know I'm sure will be as unimpressed as I am. It doesn't change anything. Chimpy and his lot are still the same lying sacks of shit they were before with nothing but their own interests in mind. If TV coverage were fair, you'd expect that better than half those asked about Saddam would say so as well.

2. Yeah, all I've seen on TV were talking heads
and it's pretty obvious what side they're on. They're doing as much handwringing about Democratic chances in the GE as some Democrats are right now on DU. And the reality is that many people will retain their ambivalence about the war and about the Bush administration -- even if they are glad that Saddam's been caught.

That's why I liked this article... it actually got some different perspectives from American people. Thank (insert deity here) for print news.

6. "If TV coverage were fair.."
But it isn't. That's our problem: The Right Wing Propaganda Machine. No one is hearing what's going on in Afghanistan, or what's really happening in Iraq. They just hear, "Saddam is captured, so Bush is great!"

7. Funny how they don't mention the dancers are commies.
All that footage on TV of Iraqi's dancing and parading in the streets were of the Communist Party in Iraq. Funny how the news doesn't mention that little tidbit. I wonder what the folks in Texas would think of that, eh?

8. How do you know that?
Did a reporter interview many of those dancing (so as to get a representative sampling)? Do you have a link to this information?

9. I noticed that also..
They were holding up pictures of Abd al-Karim Qasim. They probably didn't catch that in Texas but they should have thought a moment or two about the red banners.

3. Iraqis, too! Literally DOZENS in the streets!

And you have to admire the compassion of his American captors. They even touched up his moustache with a little Clairol after his shave and haircut, so he wouldn't have so much gray in it as he did with the beard.

4. I think it's odd.
The German leader calls Bush to congratulate him. The Israeli leader calls Bush to congratulate him. The British leader calls Bush to congratulate him. The French leader calls Bush to congratulate him. The Canadian leader calls Bush to congratulate him. etc. etc. etc.

Who's congratulating the Iraqi leaders?
