WASHINGTON, Jan 24 (Reuters) - A U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunship attacked suspected
al Qaeda operatives in southern Somalia on Monday, the Washington Post reported
on Wednesday, citing unidentified U.S. officials.

The newspaper said there was no information on the results or the specific targets
of the air strike, which would be the second this month by U.S. forces.

A Pentagon spokesman declined comment on the report.

5. AFP:Second US air strike in Somalia (Pentagon has no info on 2nd strike)
A Pentagon spokesman, Lieutenant Commander Joe Carpenter, said early Wednesday that he had no information on a second attack.

Both strikes were carried out in close cooperation with Ethiopian forces, the Post reported.

Ethiopian troops entered Somalia last month to help the weak Somali government against the country's rising Islamist movement accused by many of harboring some members of Al-Qaeda.

6. This is the second front. . . NOT Iran.
We have got to ramp up awareness of this attack. Are there any reputable journalists on the ground over there?

8. Five wounded in Mogadishu airport mortar attack as new US strike reported
MOGADISHU (AFP) - A barrage of mortar shells wounded at least five people, one seriously, in an attack on the main airport of Somalia's capital Mogadishu shortly after a UN plane landed, witnesses said.

The attack came after a leading US newspaper reported that the United States had launched a second airstrike against suspected Al-Qaeda targets in southern Somalia on Monday and Ethiopian troops began withdrawing from the city.

The attackers fired several mortars into the facility about 15 minutes after a UN delegation arrived from Kenya, but there was no indication it was the target and an airport official said damage was minimal.

One person thought to have been killed was instead badly wounded and undergoing treatment in hospital, the official said.

"We have five people wounded," the airport security official told reporters, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The one person we thought to be dead was badly injured but is now recovering."

11. United States must not undermine chances of peace in Somalia - Moore UK MP
Commenting on reports of a second US air strike in Somalia, Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary, Michael Moore MP said:

"Reports of further military action in Somalia by the United States raise serious concerns and must be clarified urgently. The United Nations Security Council must discuss this, and previous air strikes, as a matter of urgency.

"For the first time in many years in Somalia there is a window of opportunity for the establishment of a viable and democratic government. The United States must not take unilateral action which risks undermining the chances for long-term peace and stability.

12. .S. conducts second strike in Somalia-officials
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States launched a second air strike in southern Somalia this week, U.S. officials said on Wednesday, marking the second U.S. attack this month on Islamic extremists in the war-torn country.

The United States launched an air strike about two weeks ago against what officials then said were al Qaeda operatives. The target of the second strike was unclear.

One official said the targets were from the Somalia Islamic Courts Council, the militant group defeated by government troops with the backing of Ethiopia over the New Year. A second source, however, said the target was an al Qaeda operative.

U.S. confirms second air strike in Somalia

(Recasts with U.S air strike, meeting)

By Sahal Abdulle

MOGADISHU, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The United States this week conducted a second air strike
in Somalia, U.S. officials said on Wednesday, as the top U.S. envoy in East Africa met
an ousted Islamist leader to press for reconciliation with the government.

The new air strike came roughly two weeks after an AC-130 plane killed what Washington
said were eight al Qaeda-affiliated fighters hiding among Islamist remnants pushed to
Somali's southern tip by Ethiopian and Somali government forces.

One official said the targets were from the Somalia Islamic Courts Council (SICC), a
militant group defeated by government troops with Ethiopian armour and air power in a two-
week war started before Christmas.

A second source said the target was an al Qaeda operative. A Pentagon spokesman declined
to comment.

14. comment from Pentagon Spokesman
"We're going to go after al Qaeda and the global war on terror, wherever it takes us," said Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

"The very nature of some of our operations are not conducive to public discussions and there will be times when there are activities and operations that I can talk to you about and there will be other times when I just won't have anything for you," he said. "I don't have anything for you on Somalia."

Washington believes Somali Islamists have protected al Qaeda members accused of bombing two U.S. embassies and an Israeli-owned hotel in East Africa.
