Bush takes aim at executive salaries
President tells Wall Street CEO pay should be tied to shareholder interests

NEW YORK - President Bush took aim Wednesday at huge salaries and bonuses for corporate executives, going to Wall Street to say compensation packages should be tied to how good a job a CEO does for the shareholders.

Bush came to New York to highlight optimistic news about the economy and to bring his economic message out of the shadows of the Iraq war. Shortly before he spoke, the government reported the economy grew at a faster-than-expected 3.5 percent pace in the final quarter of last year.

The president also was acknowledging the anger of Americans at stories about the enormous salaries and other perks for CEOs.

“Government should not decide compensation for America’s corporate executives,” the White House said in a report ahead of Bush’s speech. “But the salaries and bonuses of CEOs should be based on their success at improving their companies and building value for their shareholders.”

The White House statement appeared aimed in part at legislation that Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has said he will push, requiring shareholder approval of executive compensation plans.

4. All right! I think we should petition Congress to defund the entire Bush Administration.
I consider myself to be a shareholder of the USA. If they won't fire them, let's at least stop funding them!

Bush: Link exec salaries to performance

By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

NEW YORK -
President Bush took aim Wednesday at huge salaries and bonuses for corporate executives, going to Wall Street to say compensation packages should hinge on how good a job a CEO does for the shareholders.

Bush came to New York to highlight optimistic news about the economy and to bring his economic message out of the shadows of the
Iraq war. Shortly before he spoke, the government reported the economy grew at a faster-than-expected 3.5 percent pace in the final quarter of last year.

The president also was acknowledging the anger of Americans at stories about the enormous salaries and other perks for CEOs.

"Government should not decide compensation for America's corporate executives," the White House said in a report ahead of Bush's speech. "But the salaries and bonuses of CEOs should be based on their success at improving their companies and building value for their shareholders."

The White House statement appeared aimed in part at legislation that Rep. Barney Frank (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, has said he will push, requiring shareholder approval of executive compensation plans.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -

9. He's hoping some CEO will quit over a salary reduction
so there will be a CEO opening for him after he's impeached. He figures he can live on 200 times the average salary of workers since he won't have to pay any taxes on it under his tax schemes.

13. An equation screaming to be balanced: "SHAREHOLDERS" are but a part.
The equation includes shareholders, for sure. But proper balance of the equation requires the inclusion of employees, customers, communities, the environment, and so on. Exclusive concentration on the sole rights of shareholders (owners) is one of the primary weaknesses of corporatism today.

21. Well, in action we will see if Bush is meaningful.
If so, I'll give him due praise for doing something right. It's just as fair, and equal, to do.

23. Well, he did mention that he didn't think govt should do anything about it.
Which pretty much means nothing WILL be done about it by anyone.

But even the idea of giving lip-service to the thought that CEO's might be over-compensated is a dramatic change for most conservatives. Next thing you know, he'll be giving lip-service to a voluntary living wage and signing a Presidential declaration stating the sweat shops should be closed someday.

And you're right, the fact it's even lip service (at the moment) is momentous indeed.

15. More meaningless blather from the tool of the super-rich.
Anybody that believes Bush will force a cut in executive salaries is either dumber than a box of rocks or smoking stuff much better than what I got.

"Catapulting propaganda" - that's Bush's own terminology for lying to he American people.

18. Thanks. There is always an ulterior motive with these crooks.
I can't imagine the gullibility of someone who believes GW Bush wants to clean up Wall Street.

Mind boggling. But there are millions in this Nation who will fall in lockstep like a gang of brownshirts, loyal to their party, not their Nation.

29. Transparently dishonest. Words fail me.
As if Hitler had to, for PR sake, go out and give speeches once in awhile on how the Jews got a bum rap, that they were OK, and so forth.

Did Little Boots Bushler's head explode when he had to tell that particular lie?
