Ambush Kills U.S. Soldier Near Baghdad
BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. soldier was killed and another wounded Tuesday in an ambush along a dangerous road in the "Sunni Triangle" north of Baghdad, the U.S. military reported.

The soldier's death brought to 153 the number of U.S. troops killed in action since the March 20 start of war — six more than during the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites).

The U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Fla., said the attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms in the attack staged along the road between Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad, and Ramadi, 60 miles west of the capital.

5. It is odd that Centcom never reports return fire or it's results.
Add that to the fact that they never report wounded unles a media resource witnesses it. They must enjoy spending our money and keeping us in the dark.

7. I don't believe the story as reported by CNN, Iraqis came and cut their
seat bets and saved 2 soldiers but then ran away because they didn't want to be seen.

1. I've never been a soldiers but I know ALL semi-extreem sports standard equipment is a quick release, 1 hand, knife. So the soldiers would cut themselves out of the fire within seconds. (Any soldiers know how many knives are carried by soldiers today? At least 2 I'm sure!)

2. I don't believe any Iraqi would run to the vehicle within seconds for fear of another hit. (So we have Iraqis 'Rambo' risking their lives for Americans? I don't think so.

3. I believe the Iraqis would stick around for a pay-off. That's the way things get done in less developed countries.

In conclusion I'm calling Rumsfeld, Bush and our entire GOP Whore Media a bunch of liars.

(I'm not sure which story on the DU is the story CNN TV is reporting)

12. I agree. That story of Rambo Iraqi's sounded odd.
It was even reported on my local news at lunch. I think what the psyops are on that one is to constantly tell Americans that despite a few rogue Saddam loyalists running around as trained assasins, most Iraqi people love us for liberating them and even go so far as to risk their lives to save our soldiers.

Hogwash.

8. CNN "glosses" statistics...
Edited on Tue Jul-22-03 07:00 AM by Flubadubya
If you watched CNN yesterday, you may have noticed they trotted out some odd, but "well-polished" numbers on the Iraq military casualties. They kept saying that there had been 92 military deaths in Iraq. They went on to enumerate the breakdown into accident vs. hostile fire etc.

I kept thinking to myself that the total of 92 just didn't sound right, last I heard it was like 149. Then I realized that they were displaying ONLY the numbers since the ratpRez declared an end to "major operations."

Notice how CNN has finessed this one. Apparently those killed during the major hostilities just don't count. It certainly couldn't be that they are trying to prop up the Chimp King by making the number of military casualties in Iraq appear to be less than they actually are. Naw, CNN surely wouldn't do that, now would they? :eyes:

9. Do you seriously think that the networks are slanting the
news to favor the Bush admin. by reporting the death numbers
since the major military offensive ended? Come on now.

11. Surely YOU jest...
Edited on Tue Jul-22-03 07:52 AM by Flubadubya
Do you watch cable news very closely? Every other word that comes out of Wolf Blitzer's mouth is slanted to favor the Bush administration. Yes, I have no doubt that the numbers were presented in that manner to help dumb down adverse reactions to the growing numbers of military dead in Iraq.

Why wouldn't they use the full data? There was no other reason not to. As I said in my original post, do the soldiers who died during the major hostilities just not count?

I offer you a challenge. Watch CNN reporting closely (especially that of Wolf Blitzer) every day for two weeks, then come back and we can discuss whether there is a bias favoring this administration. I have not based my opinion on this one incident only, believe me.

15. Statement (a) There have been 150 KIA's since the Iraq invasion
began.

Statement (b) There have been 92 KIA's since the major operations
ended in Iraq.

If you were a White House official which headline would you rather
see on CNN?

16. Unwittingly, of course, you just made my point...
The White House would prefer statement (b). And I do understand your point (total looks better vs. so many dying post-hostilities).

However, there is one thing you may be overlooking here. The American people don't discriminate or pay attention enough to discern the differences as you and I do. All they hear is "92 killed in Iraq" and that is the only "fact" they know.

I guarantee you, at least 80% of the people who saw that table shown over and over on CNN yesterday came away thinking that only 92 people have been killed in Iraq since Day 1... and that is exactly what they want us to think.

17. Have you ever heard the 92 KIA's mentioned without the
qualifier "Since President Bush announced the major hostilities over"
or some words to that effect. Some of the American people are too busy to pay close attention. That doesn't mean they're stupid.

14. I'm sure CNN reported how many wounded have to crawl for the rest of
their God given lives? How many ear drums are blown out and will never hear their loved ones speak again. How many have lost their arms and will never touch their families agains? How many are having psychiatric doctor sessions?

I'm sure CNN is reported on this!

10. Broken Record
It's the same story day after day. One killed, 2-3 injured. The attack was with RPGs and small automatic weapons fire. You'd think they'd start to conduct armored sweeps of the neighborhoods to quell this. Armor is not susceptible to RPGs.

18. They'd lose control.
If they stayed in their armor, I can't imagine them imposing control over the population, which is their objective.

19. Armor isnt the answer
Many of the streets are too narrow for armor to roll through, and you still need to have soldiers get out of their vehicles to conduct the house-to-house sweeps, at which point they'd be vulnerable again. Besides, this would just make us look all the more like the aggressors and invaders.

20. Armor vs. Humvees
I'll take the armor. This would remove the likelyhood of dying in the remote bombs that kill every soldier now.

21. The Chechens spending their summer in Iraq would like that
They seem to have developed a tactic or two to deal with armor stuck in city streets back home, and it appears they've been passing on their knowledge to Iraqis.

24. Great Idea.
"You'd think they'd start to conduct armored sweeps of the neighborhoods to quell this"
"Quell"???
Sure, let's sweep all these liberated freedom loving souls, that will fix everything, they will understand it, they will respect us more for it.
Perhaps we should "waste" a few more of them while we are at it -- show them who's boss eh??

13. They must think we all have ADD like Shrub
I haven't seen any of them present the whole numbers of those killed in Iraq whether it was in hostile action or by accident, pre-declaration of "Mission Accomplished" or combined. So, what is the total number? Around 240-250 now? It's always the minimal numbers. I guess they think that like Smirk, we can't handle that many statistics.
