Sen. Tim Johnson Working From Hospital
Some great news:

Sen. Tim Johnson working from hospital By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press Writer
3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Sen. Tim Johnson (news, bio, voting record) is reading news clippings and starting to do some office work from the hospital, almost two months after suffering a life-threatening brain hemorrhage. "At this point, he has requested more contact with office and is looking for updates from staff," his office said in a statement Friday.

Spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said the South Dakota Democrat is starting slowly.

"We do not anticipate him back (in the Senate) for several weeks," Fisher said. "We are bringing work to him rather than him coming to us. His first priority still is rehabilitation."

Johnson has been undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy since he was transferred to rehabilitation from intensive care at George Washington University Hospital last month. He recently began to read and speak in full sentences, according to statements from his doctors.

4. He reminds me of my pastor
He wanted more rehab then was being paid for, and would walk to church to do office work because they wouldn't let him drive.

He could barely talk, but now he only screws up the occasional word.

I hope the Senator continues down the road to recovery. It's a bitch, and the progress could stop at any time. But the more rehab the better. And his relative youth will be a plus.

7. There is no joy in Freepville
but I am delighted to hear this. Because of the location of the AVM, speech was the biggest concern. I'm delighted his speech area wasn't damaged beyond the ability of rehab to repair.

After any brain injury, the more function that is restored in the first few weeks, the better the overall prognosis for a nearly complete recovery.

Senator Johnson's prognosis sounds very good.

8. Isn't the brain wonderful!
And no doubt the GOP is doing an "Awww, shucks..."

Not that they wanted him dead, but certainly they'd have preferred he not be on the road to casting VOTES!

28. Committee votes can be entered by proxy...
but I'm pretty sure that to vote on the floor, you have to actually be there. That's why they kept wheeling Thurman in there when he was so ill.

29. To vote on legislation he has to appear and push the button
Remember Strom? Two guys on either side of him would hold him up/carry him in and tell him what way to vote. He wasn't the only old fool in similar straits--there have been several down the years.

Hopefully the man will be up and about, and a defacto poster child, by the time the elections are in full swing.

19. Glad
I'm glad he's doing so well and hope he's back soon.

Just as an aside, I've been wondering, does anyone know if there is anything like voting by proxy in the senate, or do you have to be there to vote - that is, could Senator Johnson start voting, if he's well enough to do that, but not yet well enough to make it into work or do you actually need to be there to vote?

Meg
