Dixie Chicks lead Grammys with 5 awards
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer

LOS ANGELES - The Dixie Chicks completed a defiant comeback on Sunday night, winning five Grammy awards after being shunned by the country music establishment over the group's anti-Bush comments leading up to the Iraq invasion.

The Texas trio won record and song of the year for the no-regrets anthem "Not Ready to Make Nice." They also won best country album — which was especially ironic considering that the group has said they don't consider themselves country artists anymore.

- snip -

"That's interesting," Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines crowed from the podium after winning the country award. "Well, to quote the great 'Simpsons' — 'Heh-Heh.'" "Just kidding," said Maines, adding, "A lot of people just turned their TVs off right now. I'm very sorry for that."

Emily Robison noted, "We wouldn't have done this album without everything we went through, so we have no regrets. I thank everyone who voted for us."

1. Take that Music Row!

FUTK!

That's right Nashville, the Dixie Chicks won BIGTIME at the REAL music awards, the Grammy's. It must have sucked (royally of course) that the corprofascists on Music Row and at Clear Channel could not "rig" these awards unlike your FAUX awards show, the CMA's. Welcome to the REAL WORLD. It is wide and diverse. We are all part of it, that includes the Country community. The only thing is, unlike in your small world, you are not the center of it. I detest your genre of "music", I always have and always will.

screeching their outrage. But they're forgetting about a little something that happened in November--something that put the "loony left" back into the mainstream!

52. I agree, mvd.
I've been a big fan since long before the much-publicized incident. I grew up on country music, classic country, and they were the first "new country" band I even looked at twice. The album "Fly" just blew me away - there was something upbeat, young and fun, as well as remaining true to what country had always been about. The other new country acts of the time, or even now? Bah. None of 'em worth much, IMHO. At the time, I assumed (remember the old saying?) that they were probably RWers, but that did not really bother me. They were so talented, I just didn't care. Then they followed up with "Wide Open Spaces" and "Home" and I was pretty much hooked.

So along comes their album "Taking the Long Way," the one that dominated the Grammys last night. Of course I knew what had happened by then - who didn't? I bought it and listened with some trepidation, hoping the venom of their former "fans" hadn't killed their spirit. I was so thankful, relieved, and even amazed when I listened to it the first time. There is no other way to describe the emotional depth of every single song on that album. I still get chills when I listen to "Everybody Knows," "Bitter End," and of course "Not Ready to Make Nice."

Even if there were political overtones to their win - which I do not necessarily think is a foregone conclusion - I still say it is the best music they have ever made, and I know their music. All of it. I think they deserve every honor they received. If the music community wants to stand up for them, who are we to argue?

Well done, Chicks! :-)

They're reformed Republickers who now hate Bush.

I think they appreciated the gifts.

Best price for the album is at OverStock.com (which, unlike Amazon, is a BLUE company).

HELP US SEND A MESSAGE

The South is critically important to the future success of the Democratic Party. The party ignored this region in the 2004 election to its detriment.

The South, in particular Tennessee may make the difference in winning back the Senate in 2006.

We hope to expand our campaign in 2006 throughout the state of Tennessee to support Harold Ford, Jr’s campaign for the U.S. Senate. We intend to keep growing in 2008 and expand our branding efforts into other states in the South and Midwest with other initiatives that will focus the unique strengths of our creative community toward reviving a broader appreciation of the Democratic brand.

What are our unique strengths? We are the producers, songwriters, musicians, managers, agents, promoters, publicists, video directors and producers, editors, journalists, and countless others that built and maintained the careers of some of Americas biggest stars including Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Brooks & Dunn, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, The Dixie Chicks, and basically the entire country music industry.

We know how to open the doors in the hearts of working class people that have been closed to the message of the Democratic Party. We maintain the proud tradition of Country Music, and all music that speaks to the lives of ordinary working people.

Our mission is critically important to the national party for the following reasons:

1. Our state could make the difference in winning the Senate back.
2. We must rehabilitate the Democratic brand in the South.
3. We can harness the unique communication skills of the Nashville community.

Our efforts are dependent on funding. Our efforts also depend on you.
Please donate to support our work. We are simultaneously seeking funding from outside sources for our mission, but small individual donations will be put to good use. In return we will give you the best of our creative community that has been recording its political soul over the last two years. For donations in excess of $20, we will let you download our catalogue of songs (which you can stream for free on our front page and at our blog www.mrdtalk.com ). But please don’t limit the size of your donation. Consider a larger donation if you are able.

We assure you that your money will be wisely and carefully spent.

We also need your help to recruit others. Talk to your friends and neighbors, use the TELL A FRIEND feature. If you see someone with a Kerry or other liberal bumpersticker, say howdy to them and ask them to check the site out and support us.

Think of us as an independent communications arm of The Democratic Party. Our mission is to develop and create new messages to advance progressive and Democratic ideals, and to fight back not with attack ads, but with compelling ideas that stir emotions and will move the American public AND The Democratic Party leadership to have a better understanding of what it really means to be a Democrat.

We believe if we are persistent with a positive message about ideas, it will ultimately be more valuable than a campaign focused on a single candidate’s personality.
We believe in the long haul. Our motto is USE YOUR VOICE, and we use it.

If you donate, you help support a great mission, and you get to download the music that has been created by our community to speak to the issues facing our nation.

14. That's awesome
Country radio may have decided that it's a good business practice to practically shut out a platinum-selling, very talented group from airplay, but the fans still had their say and helped Taking the Long Way make it to #1. It's a great album and the Dixie Chicks are a great band that deserves all the positive attention that they're getting. It's cool that, in a way, they're getting the last laugh on the whole controversial statement issue.

53. He was interviewed on NPR today and told the story of how he came up with "not ready to make nice"
His initial phone conversation with the Dixie Chicks about songwriting led him to suggest that perhaps they should do a softer record, some kind of "be nice" thing, and their reaction was absolutely not, so he woke up the next day with the title of the song. He talked with them at length to draw out their feelings and help them get the lyrics right, to not be terribly specific about the controversy but keep the theme universal. There's a bunch more history on Wikipedia as well... I'm so proud of Dan! It's just the absolute best thing that could happen for his career. Just phenomenal, and Gary Louris too... this should help push him back into the limelight! I just had drinks with Gary a few days ago, and I don't think he expected anything this big to happen with that record.

re: Bush and so were a lot of us here at DU, but not until the majority of Americans could see that what they said about Bush was 100% correct, could this have happened. Too bad so many Americans don't have the foresight and independent minds to think for themselves like the Dixie Chicks did/do.

This and Al Gore at the Grammys also will just make the Freepers say, "oh, those liberal Hollywood stars are all nuts."

We have to keep marginalizing the right wing nutjobs.

Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 01:01 PM by rocknation
as Best Heavy Metal Band, the Grammys stopped allowing everyone to vote for everything and established an outreach initiative to diversify their membership.

I myself still haven't forgiven the Grammys for developing the "Soul Gospel" category in 1969. With just a stroke of the pen, they re-defined gospel as what white people made, and turned what black people made into a minor offshoot. Gospel WITH soul? That's like Spanish salsa!

40. It was, no doubt, the best country album
But was it the best album across all genres? I hate to pooh-pooh everybody else here, but it wasn't. John Mayer's Continuum was INCREDIBLE (and don't we approve of his politics?). I think some excellent artists got overlooked because the Grammys wanted to make a statement. Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, etc.? I love country music (the real thing, that is, not the current pop-schlock that passes for country on Clear Channel stations), but I don't think Long Way Home was all THAT.

And frankly, isn't anybody wondering why Natalie barely took the opportunity on a huge stage to make a more pointed statement? Maybe Grammy told her, "Look, we're giving you this as payback, but shut the hell up this time." Can you say sell-out?

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but what the hell...

43. AFP: Grammy glory completes Dixie Chicks' comeback after Bush furore

Grammy glory completes Dixie Chicks' comeback after Bush furore

by Rob Woollard Mon Feb 12, 3:02 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The Dixie Chicks' sweep of the Grammys late Sunday completed a remarkable comeback from three years of death threats, boycotts and plunging record sales, sparked by one group member's remarks slamming President George W. Bush.

"Just so you know, we're ashamed the President is from Texas," lead singer Natalie Maines told an audience in London in early March 2003, 10 days before the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Maines did not know it then, but her comments were to unleash a political maelstrom upon her and fellow band members Martie Maguire and Emily Robison that reached extraordinary levels of ferocity.

Maines moved quickly to issue an apology as news of her comments filtered back to her homeland and the outrage mounted.

Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 07:34 PM by Mike Daniels
Sorry, but fellow musicians and other industry professionals awarded the Chicks the awards. Outside of the country segment the industry has always been behind the Chicks during this whole ordeal.

A comeback hasn't materialized until Clear Channel and the other conglomerates remove the blanket ban on the Chicks and let the individual stations and their listeners decide whether to put the Chicks back on the air. At this point it doesn't sound like country radio is planning on bringing them back on the air despite the awards.

Also, given that almost every Album of the Year sees some sales boost right after the awards I wouldn't count a short term increase in sales as a comeback either.

Make no mistake. I'm glad they won but their victories are neither vindication or a comeback at this point in time.

60. "I'm Not Ready To Make Nice....", note to our Dem leaders:
See how well that worked? The people...(remember them, they are part of: WE THE PEOPLE), had no difficulty with this concept.
