Lugo: Paraguayan Poor Will Impel Change
Lugo: Paraguayan Poor Will Impel Change

Asuncion, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) Fernando Lugo, the Paraguayan "bishop of the poor" who renounced his vocation in order to run for president in 2008, formally announced his candidacy Monday before thousands of supporters.

Lugo told the crowd that the forces of the poor will bring the changes that Paraguay needs and the major role will be played by those living in misery, the forgotten and victims of injustice.

The candidate called upon the people to be prepared for a tough battle between the government's dirty money and the consciousness of the people yearning for an honorable and less corrupt country.

Lugo also warned of a predictable contest of his candidature, as it is customary to attack those on the side of the poor.

He said he hoped and expected to set up a national alliance to contend the ruling Colorado Party.

3. Go, Paraguay! Viva, Lugo!
I don't normally get on my fellow and sister North Americans for their ignorance, cuz I don't think they are--and the polls prove me right time and again (for instance, 56% of the American people opposed Bush's heinous war FROM THE BEGINNING, before the invasion, and before Colin Powell's 100% pack of lies to the UN was fully exposed, showing themselves to be immune to the most relentless, 24/7 barrage of war propaganda any people has ever been subjected to; EVEN WHEN half of them still believed that Saddam had WMDs, and/or had something to do with 9/11, the MAJORITY still opposed it--didn't think Saddam was any real threat, not worth a war, didn't trust Bush). However, on Latin American issues, our people really and truly are uninformed, with heads full of corporate/Bushite propaganda. And they're missing the greatest democratic revolution in the world. Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Nicaragua--all now with leftist (majorityist ) governments--and soon Peru AND PARAGUAY! God, Paraguay! Also, big leftist movement in Mexico, and one getting started in Guatemala.

Lessons from the South American revolution:

1. TRANSPARENT elections.
2. Grass roots organization.
3. Think big.

If the South Americans can do it--with their history of brutal fascist oppression, often US-backed--so can we!

You wonder why our war profiteering corporate news monopolies hardly ever report on this, and try their damnedest to "Iron Curtain" it? This is very dangerous stuff to our Corporate Rulers. Democracy. Majority rule. And it is sweeping Latin America like a wildfire!

4. I "pray" for their deliverance, and for peace to come to them.
I especially hope this priest, unlike Bishop Romero, the nuns who were tortured and thrown out of an airplane, the priests who were slaughtered, along with their housekeeper and her sister, etc., etc., etc., etc. will survive, and will see that New World in peace they have all been hoping and praying for their whole lives.

5. Paraguayans Have Positive View of Lugo
Paraguayans Have Positive View of Lugo
February 14, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in Paraguay hold a favourable opinion of a prospective presidential candidate, according to a poll by COIN released by Últimas Noticias. 63 per cent of respondents have a positive view of Fernando Lugo.

Lugo served as bishop in the diocese of San Pedro, located in one of Paraguay’s poorest areas. As a priest, he requires an official permit from The Vatican in order to become directly involved in politics.

Lino Oviedo—the founder of the National Union of Ethical Citizens (UNACE)—is second with 38 per cent, followed by current education minister Blanca Ovelar with 34 per cent, Central Department governor Federico Franco with 30 per cent, and Pedro Fadul of the Beloved Homeland Party (PPQ) also with 30 per cent. Only 20 per cent of respondents hold a favourable view of incumbent president Nicanor Duarte.
(snip)

The next presidential election is scheduled for April 2008.
