Iraqi Parliament Chief Opposes US Offer To Host 7,000 Refugees

Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Mahmoud al- Mashhadani on Thursday rejected the US offer to host some 7,000 Iraqi refugees, saying he hoped instead that the refugees would be hosted by Arab countries.

After meeting Syrian President Bashar Assad, al-Mashhadani told reporters he rejected any Iraqi emigration to the US and depicted the matter as a "migration of Iraqi minds out of their homeland."

Not only the Iraqi speaker rejected the notion, but also some Iraqi refugees reacted negatively towards it.

"I don't like to live in a country which has occupied my homeland and killed hundreds of thousands of its sons," said Adnan al-Hassan.

"I don't want the Iraqis to be dispersed. I wish they (the Americans) would leave Iraq and not the Iraqis," said Arkan Hanna, vicar of Syria's Assyrian Church, which represents some 40,000 Iraqi Christian refugees.
