Kevin Rudd has emerged as the voters' preferred Prime Minister for the first time and surged to a record high approval rating, but the Coalition has made inroads into Labor support.
.......
Riding a wave of popularity, Mr Rudd has overtaken Mr Howard on the important question of preferred prime minister, leading John Howard by a Newspoll record of 10 points - 47 per cent to 37 per cent.
And his approval rating has surged to 68 per cent. This is also a record for a federal Opposition leader in the 21-year history of the poll and outstrips former Labor leader Mark Latham's peak of 66 per cent in March 2004 - four months after he was elected as Labor leader.
.......
Mr Howard launched a new offensive against Mr Rudd yesterday, accusing him of double standards after the Prime Minister announced an extra 70 troop instructors would be sent to Iraq.
"I think it's an amazing contradiction that Mr Rudd should in the one breath say we should all get out and let the Iraqis look after it and we turn around and try and do something to help them look after it and he's against that as well," Mr Howard said.
