Al Gore May Receive Honorary Doctorate In Climatology
Al Gore May Receive Honorary Doctorate In Climatology

February 20, 2007 4:50 p.m. EST

Julie Farby - All Headline News Staff Writer
Minneapolis, MN (AHN)-Former Vice President and current environmental activist Al Gore is under consideration to receive an honorary degree from the University of Minnesota for his work in climatology.

Gore has recently garnered worldwide attention for his Academy Award nominated global warming documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," as well as his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work combating global climate change.

Although, University spokesperson Daniel Wolter did admit the University of Minnesota was interested in honoring Gore for his work on the subject, he refused to confirm or deny specific details surrounding the honoring ceremony.

"He's in the news and is a legitimate expert on a pressing issue of global concern, climate change, so this level of interest is understandable," Wolter said. "However, no plans have been set and it's unlikely that would occur this spring."

Wolter went on to say that the University will "continue to look into the matter."

1. I'd settle for him being named State Climatologist of Oregon.

...rather than the squatter claiming the title now.

3. This is why I disagree with a draft Gore movement
He is doing far more good where he is,and being able to focus on this one issue makes him the most effective voice the environmental movement has right now.

4. He'd be able to do *much* more as President.
Edited on Tue Feb-20-07 06:22 PM by w4rma
He'd probably be able to get the majority of the policies he wants written into law within just a few months of taking office, especially with a Democratic Congress.

With the environment being his signature issue, his election would force Congress to follow him, wherever he wanted to go, on this issue.

Also, some of Gore's relevance comes from his being in such a good position to run for and win the Presidency.

5. It's possible
I'm just afraid he'd get tied down in all the beltway games through no choice of his own.Not trying to be negative on him as Prez, just glad to see someone,ANYONE,out there getting this message out so effectively.Even people I know who never liked the Gores (The PMRC still stings many fans of odd music, and that's everyone I know!) think of him totally differently than they used to.

I also think he could have a huge influence on any Democrat that takes office in '08,so we could get the best of both worlds either way I guess :)

9. Nonsense. He's far more effective as a private citizen.
When a dem prez takes the house in '08 they will essentially do whatever Gore tells them to do on the environment file.

Gore can continue to put all of his focus and energy into this singular issue, which is of singular importance.

All the partisan and political and domestic/foreign policy crap won't be distracting him.

11. Ya think so?
I don't. At least it's not the certainty you portray.

DLC types like catering to corporations almost as much as the GOP. Can you see Hillary dissing the energy and manufacturing industries with any kind of meaningful standards that are more than window dressing? I don't.

With Al at the helm, it WILL be a certainty ... assuming he can get it past the Congressional DLCers.

16. Without Gore, we may not *have* a Democratic administration next time
There's no potential or announced candidate as strong as Gore is.

15. funny thing, my PhD committee was joking that Gore would have been ...
... the perfect "external examiner" in my case, because he's been working on the issue for longer than all of them have -- even the biogeochemistry and atmospheric sciences guys. And given that the topic I chose was related to global warming mitigation policy, the fact that Gore co-authored the Kyoto Protocol easily makes him an international authority. In fact, I'm probably LUCKY that they got someone else (from one of the government agencies), because Gore knows the legislation and could have given me a pretty tough grilling!

I've been studying global warming for almost 20 years, but Gore still knows a lot more about it than I do -- I'm not ashamed to admit this.
