Anti-American feelings soar among Muslims, study finds
The War on Terror has radicalised Muslims around the world to unprecedented levels of anti-American feeling, according to the largest survey of Muslims ever to be conducted.

Seven per cent believe that the events of 9/11 were “completely justified”. In Saudi Arabia, 79 per cent had an “unfavourable view” of the US.

Gallup’s Centre for Muslim Studies in New York carried out surveys of 10,000 Muslims in ten predominantly Muslim countries. One finding was that the wealthier and better-educated the Muslim was, the more likely he was to be radicalised.

The surveys were carried out in 2005 and 2006. Along with an earlier Gallup survey in nine other countries in 2001, they represent the views of more than 90 per cent of the world’s Muslims. A further 1,500 Muslims in London, Paris and Berlin are involved in a separate poll to be published in April.

The findings come in a climate of growing mistrust between Islam and the West. Another recent survey in the US found that 39 per cent of Americans felt some prejudice towards Muslims.

1. Some things are just so obvious that it's funny when
the media does a story on it, just like this.

Like no one would have guessed.

7. Sounds like something Jerry Falwell would say.
Doesn't stand up to much when you consider all of the gay muslims.

10. hmmm, I have a question.
I wasn't under the impression that gay muslims were accepted in most middle east countries. Am I wrong? Are there some ME countries that welcome gays and lesbians?

13. Yes I know
My question was are there some Middle Eastern countries that gay and lesbian people can be openly gay in. My intention is not to be snarky, I am just curious because we always hear things about gay men and women being killed because of thier sexual orientation.

15. What do middle eastern countries have to do with it?
We're talking about muslims, only the minority of whom live in the middle east.

Yes, Sharia law outlaws homosexuality. As does the Bible, and US law in many places up to a few years ago.

That said, culturally there were places were homosexuality is much more accepted, from what I understand. In Asia Minor and Persia. That may have changed due to radicalization over the past few decades, I am unsure.

"I am just curious because we always hear things about gay men and women being killed because of thier sexual orientation."

You're probably referring to the two gay teens that were executed "for homosexuality" in Iran a couple of years ago. As it turned out, they had actually been convicted of raping a child.

Yes, civil rights have a long way to go in Middle Eastern countries.

That said, the nonsense that "muslims hate gays" is just another form of bigotry.

That is what I was trying to get at, since the MSM hasn't been very good at giving us actual facts.

9. Reality check
Anti-American sentiment is higher than it has been, because of Bush's foreign policy. And you need a reality check if you believe the insanity you just typed.

8. It turns into one big circle of hate
Edited on Wed Feb-21-07 12:56 PM by Marrah_G
The more this administration screws up in the middle east the more they hate us and the more likely it is that someone is going to come for some payback, which in turn will create more anti-muslim hate, which will cause even more anti-american hate and so on and so on.

I do not think the majority of Americans, even though they are against the war, understand just exactly how badly this administration has hurt us. They have created a snowball that it will be incredibly hard for the next administration to resolve, if it is able to resolve it at all.

What we need so very badly in the next election is a man or woman who is capable and committed to mending the wounds caused in the last 6 years. Peace is the only true way to security. Even after the visible scars fade the emotional injuries both here and in the middle east will continue on for a very long time.

16. Rummy wondered whether we were creating terrorists quicker
than we could kill them. Well the metrics that he was wishing for are in and they prove what we already knew intuitively. That is if you invade a country kill and maim its citizens and steal its wealth, the people in the invaded country and people like them all over the world will hate you more and more for every minute you continue your occupation. And now these criminals are considering bombing Iran as an exit strategy.
