U.S. helicopter may have been shot down

By SINAN SALAHEDDIN, Associated Press Writer 21 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. military spokesman said initial reports indicate that a U.S. helicopter first reported to have made a "hard landing" was shot down north of Baghdad. Military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell had said earlier the airmen were picked up by rescuers, but gave no further details. At least seven U.S. helicopters have crashed or been forced down by hostile fire in the past month, killing 28 troops and civilians.

A suicide car bomber struck a police checkpoint Wednesday in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, killing at least 13 people in the spiritual heartland of the militia factions led by radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Elsewhere in Iraq, a U.S. Marine was killed Tuesday in fighting in volatile Anbar province, the military said.

At least 3,149 members of the U.S. military have died since the war began in 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

1. When it's a helicopter it's been shot down. they try to avoid admitting
it for as long as they can. Sometimes they avoid the truth for a week or two.

(Adds confirmation helicopter shot down)

BAGHDAD, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Insurgents shot down a U.S. military
helicopter with nine people on board north of Baghdad on Wednesday
but no one was killed, the military said.

It was the eighth downing of a helicopter in Iraq in a month.

A military spokeswoman said it appeared the Black Hawk helicopter
had been brought down by small arms fire and rocket-propelled
grenades.

The U.S. military said in an earlier statement that all nine people
on board were evacuated and there were no serious injuries.

6. Another U.S. Chopper shot down in Iraq
A US helicopter which crash-landed north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad was shot down, the US military has said.

All nine people aboard the Black Hawk were evacuated by a second helicopter and none suffered serious injuries.

Initial reports suggested the aircraft was hit by rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire, the military said.

Recent attacks on helicopters have raised fears that insurgents may be studying flight patterns or may have acquired more advanced weapons.
