WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday challenged GOP presidential hopeful John McCain (news, bio, voting record)'s assertion that Donald H. Rumsfeld was one of the country's worst defense secretaries.

"John's entitled to his opinion. I just think he's wrong," said Cheney, a friend of Rumsfeld. He also disclosed that the Arizona senator had apologized to him for a previous comment that the vice president had "badly served" President Bush on Iraq.

"John said some nasty things about me the other day, and then next time he saw me, ran over to me and apologized. Maybe he'll apologize to Rumsfeld," Cheney said in an interview with ABC News.

McCain's campaign declined to comment on Cheney's remarks.

6. If Rummy wasn't the worst, who was?

There have only been 22 Secretaries of Defense. Rumsfeld was #13 and #21, and Cheney was #17. (And #16, Frank Carlucci, was Rummy's roommate at Princeton. Not relevant, but interesting. Small world.) So if Rumsfeld wasn't the worst ever, I wonder who Cheney would pick? Certainly not himself?

Couldn't be--he was so good in Die Hard With a Vengeance. (This is true, Cheney has an uncredited cameo. Despite having been Secretary of Defense for a longer period of time than Cheney, Rumsfeld does not appear in any of the Die Hard movies. Life is unfair.)
