Ex-N.H. Senator to Seek Fla. Office

MIAMI -- Former New Hampshire Sen. Bob Smith, hoping to represent his newly adopted home state, said Wednesday he plans to seek the seat of retiring Sen. Bob Graham.

Smith, a Republican who moved to Sarasota in May, told The Associated Press that he will formally announce his candidacy next month.

"I'm going to run a campaign which I basically offer my credentials to the people of Florida, my seniority, my experience in the Senate," Smith said. "I want to help President Bush. This is a critical state for the president."

Smith, 62, is a social conservative who frequently has been at odds with the GOP establishment. He quit the party and ran for president in 1999, but rejoined the party a few months later, saying he'd made a mistake. (snip/...)

Senator Says Elian is Being Drugged
Associated Press

SALEM, N.H. (AP) - A U.S. senator said he believes Elian Gonzalez is being drugged to make him more amenable to returning to Cuba, and called the Maryland compound where Elian is living "a concentration camp.''

In a speech Sunday, Republican Sen. Bob Smith said the 6-year-old is being "re-educated'' by Cuban visitors to the compound in preparation for an asylum hearing Thursday.

"They've already found tranquilizer drugs with the doctors. I think you can reasonably assume that on May 11 the little kid is going to come say 'I want to go back to Cuba,''' Smith said.

Elian's pediatrician, Dr. Caridad Ponce de Leon, was with a group of Cubans that flew to the United States on April 27 to spend time with the boy, whose mother drowned during their escape from Cuba in November. (snip/...)

1. ROFL!
Bob Smith is officially pathetic. If he couldn't survive the New Hampshire GOP primary, he'll never win the FL primary...my money's on Martinez there.

5. How could anyone vote for this piece of work?
I died laughing when Military Police wouldn't let him enter the AFB that was protecting Elian Gonzales. Smith said to the Military Police, "do you know who I am?" The rest is history.

Janet Reno copped a sunday on his fat ass, 'eh?

7. This primary may be entertaining and it might even hurt Bush.
From the article:
Smith is entering a crowded field to replace Graham, a Democrat.

Republicans running or considering a run include former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez, Rep. Katherine Harris, state House Speaker Johnnie Byrd and legal activist Larry Klayman.

Nothing but criminally ambitious nutcases in the race.

According to a guest on last Saturday's Capitol Gang, Mel Martinez is the White House choice, but there evidently is some animosity in the Florida republican party towards him and towards Turd Blossom Rove. The republicans who dislike Martinez apparently include Jeb Bush. The White House does not want Harris because of the 2000 election, but she currently leads in the polls. From the transcript:
CARLSON: Twenty seconds. Did I hear you say that the White House would rather lose with Martinez than win with Katherine Harris?

FIEDLER: I -- this is my opinion on this, Margaret, but I think the answer is yes, because Katherine Harris brings up a lot of bad feelings in Florida, and I think could throw the state into the Democratic column in 2004.

The justice of Harris winning the primary and driving a democratic turnout leading to a Bush loss of Florida is a beautiful possibility to contemplate.

8. as a NH resident
I hang my head in shame, and offer you all a sincere apology for the very existance of Bob Smith.

Now poor Florida will suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous combovers. I am so sorry.

One thing about Bobbola - he is in tight with Florida energy companies. I did some research a few years back on where his campaign money was coming from, and a staggering ammount came from Florida energy companies. Nukes, too. He's a good corporate buddy. He's a total nitwit - who made it pretty far on blind party loyalty and obedience. He sure wasn't a keen thinker.

9. Please let this happen
Dare we hope that old smitty might actually win the pubbie nomination? Is Florida trying to compete with California for the strangest political twists and turns? Run, smitty, run!

10. Ah, but picture this...
Smith and Katherine Harris in the same primary. Christ, what a spectacle of clowns. They'd probably have to resort to mud wrestling to gain some gravitas.

Ack... Just pictured that. Not good... must run... must get to toilet...
