U.S. helicopter makes "hard landing" in Iraq
BAGHDAD, March 1 (Reuters) - A U.S. helicopter made a "hard landing" in northern Iraq on Thursday, and initial reports said the cause was a mechanical problem, not hostile fire, the military said in a statement.

Two pilots on board the U.S. Army OH-58 Kiowa helicopter were injured and had been evacuated, the statement added.

Residents in the area said they had seen the helicopter hit wires south of the city of Kirkuk.

7. yah but
Consider the progress your car is making in the war against guardrails. Just think, another fifty cars and you might completely remove that rail on one side of the road. Such is the price of victory.

9. update: Scrogin sustains serious injuries in Iraq
Chief Warrant Officer Patrick Scrogin, 24, was seriously injured Thursday as a U.S. Army helicopter he was in made a “hard landing” in northern Iraq Thursday.

According to Scrogin's brother Bill, Moberly, Patrick and his co-pilot were aboard an OH-58 Kiowa when the helicopter's computer failed.

~snip~

Scrogin's injuries are extensive. The two pilots were first taken to an American military hospital in Kirkuk, about 180 miles north of Baghdad. Currently he is in Landstuhl, Germany and Scrogin said he will probably be moved to Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C., by Tuesday.

“So far,” said Scrogin, “he has lost his left leg below the knee and three fingers on his left hand. He has a crushed pelvis, five fractured vertebra in his upper back and fractured facial bones.”

You've got a busted helicopter and two pilots injured, I know what *I'd* call it.

when the helicopter came in for a landing!
