ACLU Sues Over Detained Immigrant Kids

By ANABELLE GARAY
Associated Press Writer

DALLAS (AP) -- Civil liberties and immigration advocates sued federal officials Tuesday on behalf of children confined to a former Texas prison-turned-center for immigrant families awaiting possible deportation.

"There is simply no justification for imprisoning innocent children who pose no threat to anyone," said Vanita Gupta, an attorney with the ACLU's Racial Justice Program.

About half of the approximately 400 people held at Hutto are children, officials said. None of the children or adults there have criminal records. Many were sent there after seeking asylum in the United States and will face waits of more than 200 days.

In court documents, Bahja Ibrahim, a 9-year-old Somali girl, in the facility since November described the conditions as difficult. She said, "It is hard to be in here because no toys no good food no clean clothes. Everything is bad here."

6. The unborn are "innocent babies"
and should be protected at all costs. Once born, however, this government considers it perfectly fine to keep them in prison. This is absolutely unacceptable and disgusting. What screwed up values, from the "morals and values" crowd. They make me sick.

7. Down the road a little bit and just around the corner, America will explain away
Edited on Wed Mar-07-07 12:53 AM by Solly Mack
all the abuses and criminal acts as America's crazy time when Bush was President and the nation was helpless to stop him. This will allow Americans to sleep better at night - smug as a bug with the largest dung ball. They'll tell themselves never again and how good it is that things have changed, carefully pushing out the intrusion of thought that reminds them that those words have been said many times before....because well, this time will be different.

Color me bitter.

8. "open borders"
Open borders are the WET DREAM of corporatists and the tax evading, drug corrupted upper classes in Mexico. Villages, all over Mexico, are dying as "WHOLE FAMILIES" move to the US. Once here they are greeted by Senator, NCLB, Kennedy and the child predator protecting, Bishop of LA.

We know the Bishop's motivations, more Catholics. What is motivating Sen.Kennedy. Do you think Kennedy's immigration bill is going to work any better than his No Child Left Behind disaster, underfunded and full of idiotic ideas such as insisting that a 90 IQ with a learning disability overlay is going to learn algebra.

How are Union strikes going to be effective when business has an endless stream of scabs flooding our southern borders?

10. I don't think that Victor Hugo...
I don't think that Victor Hugo was a corporatist or a "drug corrupted upper class" Mexican when he wrote to the effect-- "What do you value more: imaginary red and black lines on a map, or people?".

But then again, he *was* from Freedom (the country that used to be know as France until they disagreed with U.S. policy), so maybe that's good enough for you.

11. INCARCERATED immigrant kids. Say it -- "INCARCERATED."
Fucking media is complicit in this, adopting the Neonazicons' Orwellian terms.
