McClatchy: Video is said to disprove rape claim (taped confession)
Video is said to disprove rape claim
By LEILA FADEL
McClatchy Newspapers
BAGHDAD, Iraq | The case of an Iraqi woman who alleged on Arabic satellite television last month that three Iraqi policemen had raped her continues to roil the country.

Government officials are debating whether to release a video that they say shows that the episode was a fabrication.

The Shiite Muslim-led government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has already called the woman a liar and leaked information to discredit her. Officials released her name, said she worked as a prostitute in the 1990s and accused her of bigamy.

On Monday, four Iraqi officials said that the woman, who at first was thought to be a Sunni, was a Shiite and that she was detained two days after she made her allegations.

Three of the officials said the government had a taped confession from the woman in which she said she was paid by the Iraqi Islamic Party, one of Iraq’s most important Sunni organizations, to fabricate the story in an effort to undermine the Baghdad security plan.

1. So the Maliki government chooses to smear the rape victim
calling her a liar and a prostitute. What a bunch of morons we support!

2. Now IG
You were the first (and rightly so) to doubt the Duke accuser. I would like to see a little more info on this, more specifically if they have a tape then lets see it.

5. It could easily be true; it could easily be false.
There isn't really much way to tell because the government would smear the victim whether the crime was real or not. In fact, especially if the crime was real.

Personally, when Maliki said the accused officers should be commended, that's when I smelled a rat. You don't normally commend people for NOT raping women.

7. There is no Reade Seligmann to cast doubt on the accuser's account
and considering the Maliki government's track record on veracity, I doubt very much that such a video exists.

6. I Guess They Missed the Fingernails In the Bathroom As Solid Evidence

You know?

Considering the old, "Iraqis steal babies from incubators and kill them" story, this should have been greeted with some amount of skepticism.

4. Sounds like they might be pulling a shrubya ...
Can't release the 'evidence' for national security reasons.
