Third man indicted in probe of Muslim charity
Wednesday, March 14, 2007

WORCESTER, Mass. -- A third man has been indicted in connection with the investigation of a defunct Muslim charity that federal authorities allege sent money to terrorist organizations.

Samir Al-Monla, 50, of Boston, pleaded not guilty in federal court in Worcester on Tuesday to conspiracy, making false statements, and obstructing and impeding federal authorities.

Emadeddin Z. Muntasser of Braintree and Muhammed Mubayyid of Shrewsbury were indicted in May 2005 on charges that they lied to the government about the nature of Care International Inc.

In the superseding indictment, Al-Monla, president of Care from 1996-98, is accused of lying to federal authorities about the nature of the charity, specifically that it solicited money for jihadists involved in armed conflict overseas.

Care International said it was formed to help war orphans, widows and refugees in Muslim nations. But federal prosecutors say the organization was actually the Boston branch of the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Al-Kifah Refugee Center. The center was a recruitment office for Mektab al Khidmat, which Osama bin Laden co-founded in the 1980s to recruit mujahideen to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, according to the 9-11 Commission.

when it's a Muslim charity, too bad they want a closed trial when it comes to others, ahem.
on edit: You are talking about the same organization that Margret Hassan was a directer of, I googled Care International Inc. and found nothing that applied to this, when I added Muslim charity I got that, what is odd I looked them up about 2 weeks ago and there was all kinds of info that has apparently disappeared. From what I remember they give mostly to Palestinians through non-Israeli sources meaning Israel can't withhold the money as punishment.
