Norwegian politicians plan visits to Iran

Oslo - As the United Nations Security Council was mulling tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme, a Norwegian group of parliamentarians was due to visit the country in May, news reports said Friday.

The head of the foreign affairs committee Olav Akselsen told broadcaster NRK that discussions would include Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

Akselsen said dialogue with Iran was necessary.

State Secretary Raymond Johansen, who earlier this week visited Gaza and held talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, was also slated to visit Tehran in May, NRK said.

Earlier this week, Johansen became the first Western official to end a one-year-old boycott of the governing Hamas movement shortly after it entered into a unity coalition with rival Fatah party.
