Dean's Yale Transcripts Are Released

WASHINGTON -- Some centrist Democrats may fret about front-runner Howard Dean's ability to match up to President Bush in a general election, but his college transcript sure could.

Bush, who graduated from Yale University in 1968, had a less-than-stellar record, with what the president described as "gentleman's Cs." Dean's transcript shows the political science major sailing through a slight sophomore slump to earn mostly high marks his last two years.

Dean's freshman year in 1967 coincided with Yale's introduction of a less traditional grading system that replaced As and Bs with Hs and HPs, for "Honors" and "High Pass."

The letter F was still there, but Dean never got one. He earned seven honors, 17 high passes and 14 passes.

The transcript shows Howard Brush Dean III with a Park Avenue address and a course load reflective of those antiestablishment years. Dean took more than one class on Marxism and studied the "History of Soviet Union," "Soviet Foreign Policy," "International Communism" and "Chinese Politics."

3. Yeah, but Clark was first in his class
I'd say that's a big honors high pass!

25. do you think the combination would be good?
Dean is a credit to us, Clark is a credit to us. I think they compliment one another very well. Dean on America and Clark on foreign affairs. And really, whoever is vice president probably will be president next time around.

Is there someway we as a group can tell Lieberman to shut the hell up? Like we as a group sent flowers to Byrd. Is there a way to send Lieberman the finger?

6. Isn't it time to diss the Ivy league? Hey, Jeff Skillings by himself
I've heard more than a few people blame the Ivy league for many of our economic problems. Can you say Arthur Anderson? Enron? Skull and Bones?

4. Read the last paragraphs
Very sad, I am not a Kerry supporter but I hate to see anyone mortgage their family home to raise money for a campaign.

12. Mortgaging his home is not a problem for kerry
His wife is a multi-millionaire. Under campaign law he cannot use her money in his campaign, but the house is in his name so he can mortgage it. When all is said and done his wife will just pay off the mortgage.

5. Dean's courses sounds a whole lot like the Pol Sci courses I took
I wondered years later why I thought I could make a living with a Polly Sci degree... But I could sure argue!

Looks like he had the "less traditional grading system" too, but in his last year.

10. I thought it was interesting that * took ONE geology course ...
... and then none of the physical/natural sciences after that. I wonder if this accounts for a) his inability to find oil in Texas, and b) his lack of comprehension of the processes behind the greenhouse effect?

He also had Margaret Mead as a prof ... and remember, she once remarked, "Women want mediocre men, and men are working to become as mediocre as possible".

I wonder if she was looking at *, sleeping in the back row, when she thought of that line?

13. Sad to say
but in the anti-intellectual climate of the US, it isn't necessarily a plus to be an academic superstar.

The know-nothings on the right will consider this to be just one more sign of Dean's elitism.

They would rather cast their lot with a C student who doesn't remind them of their own failures.

14. awesome...bush's college record is shameful
of course 'intellectualism' is bad, remember - at least for conservatives. they seem to hate it. (maybe they just can't compete...)

23. Interesting...
...hehe, yeah, and what strikes me, and I hope I don't offend any Dean supporters with this, it isn't that he strikes me as an incredibly intelligent man, but someone who worked at it, took pride in his academic achievements, and wouldn't settle for poor performance...and yeah, seriously, that's a young Dean? What a handsome young rake.

Of the whole world looking at my college transcript!

Is this REALLY necessary? I already know Dean is smarter than Bush. Anyone with eyes and ears knows that!

But this is good news for the doctor and good news for democrats.

30. maybe biased...
As a university instructor, one sees the emphasis people place on good grades. Parents, students, everyone wants to see good grades. It is one of the most sought-after goals in life.

So yes, America is an anti-intellectual environment but there is status and prestige in a transcript that reveals high achievement.
