Al Gore's son arrested for pot possession
WASHINGTON (AP) - The son of former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore has been charged with marijuana possession.

Albert A. Gore III, 21, was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for driving a vehicle without its headlights on.

Two passengers were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were identified as Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass.

(snip)

A search of the vehicle turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana, and a soft drink can that also smelled of marijuana.

5. How is this a distraction?
Is Al a candidate? Is his son? Did he use his (non-existant) influence as a non-office holder to have the story buried and the arrest expunged?

96. To use that logic
So a former VP's son is caught with a little MJ and this will turn off voters. And these swing voters will now not vote Democratic. Ok let's say that is so, how many voters?

Will these same voters be turned off be turned off by the following and not vote Republican:
1) Jenna & Barbara Bush the daughters of current P caught using illegal IDs to drink while under the supervision of Secret Service, not once but twice.
2) Noelle Bush the niece of the current P and the daughter of the Governor of Florida is sent to drug rehab and while there is caught with a rock of Crack in her shoe and is not sent to jail for violating her rehab but is instead allowed to finish it with out consequences.
3) Niel Bush, brother to the current P and Governor of Florida, is getting a divorce because he was messing aound over seas while on business trips.
4) Strom Thurmonds' daughter, who was concieved by rape and whom was in her twenties when Strom ran as a segragationist canidate for President, is finally revealed after his death.
5) Rush Limbaugh admits that he is addicted to pain killers and it appears that he was handling thousands of pills and is still under investigation.
6) Bill Janklow, former Governor of South Dakota, Repubican from S.D. is convicted of manslaughter.

These are a few off the top of my head. So if some swing voters are turned off by the Dems having a former Vp's son caught with MJ shouldn't these same swing voters be even more disgusted with the above done by Repubicans?

86. How do you know this?
Did the school release this information or did the courts? I would think that it would be highly unethical and illegal for a school to release any information about a student or a former student to the press. I also was under the impression that juvenile criminal records were sealed, so the courts could not ethically release them to the press or anyone else.

Remember, Howard Dean's son had a "problem" with the law this past summer...but, that's all history now.

Rush is another story. His "addiction" and the accompanying hypocrisy requires closer scrutiny. He needs the book thrown at him!

(BTW, I'm a Howard Dean supporter...I don't want to be accused of bashing the doctor-or his family!)

38. The reason the story will blow over
Is that no Bush wants to go toe to toe on parenting skills.

So Howard Dean's kid gets a pass and the non-running Al Gore's kid will get a pass.

And if Gore goes to the arraignment to be with his kid, no Republican will ever feel comfy mentioning it again.

Why? Because Bush is a heartless pig who doesn't even love his own daughters and they know it. (And no, I wouldn't say this about most people or most Republicans. There is nothing so basic as loving your child no matter what your political view. George doesn't. You can feel it.)

Along with the rest of the Fox network, you can bet we'll be hearing about the kid being a 'pothead' for the rest of the campaign. Bush won't go after li'l Gore, but every other conservative on the tube will, while ignoring the drinking and pot problems the Bush twins have.

Oh wait, that would be hypocritical of them. Maybe they will ignore the story after all.

21. This is significant because it breaks the silence
Edited on Sat Dec-20-03 11:53 PM by Virgil
If you follow the media coverage of cannabis and its prohibition, you first know they do not use the word prohibition much in the media. The first strategy of the media to prolong CP (Cannabis Prohibition) is silence. This is generally only interrupted for demonization. This is what I call a "quiet, quiet, boo!!!" strategy.

This story is most significant because it breaks the silence of the incarcerationists. It is also important because it shows how senseless an idea it is that the UN could have a drug-free world in 5 years and that a drug-free America is the wildest of fantacies. It shows to the Okkies that it is not just a bunch of blacks in the inner cities of America wasting their lives that use laughing grass.

This has no real consequence in the primaries, but it does raise the issue that silence avoids, and gives me a chance to say that Kucinich is for ending the failure of the WOD. On his election he said that he would sign an executive order ending the vicious and malicious, misguided, and mean-spirited raids on MMJ patients and their support system.

Toking up while driving is dumb, but driving at night without your lights is suicidal, the kind of suicidal that can take several innocent bystanders or bydrivers with you.

Li'l Al, take my advice: Stay in one place when you party!

54. I think it's important to call it Prohibition
Because that's what it is. It didn't work in the 20s and it's not working now. People in general know that prohibition didn't work. It created many more problems than it solved (if it solved any). It was a waste of taxpayer resources and is treats grown adults like children.

Having been around both heavy pot smokers and heavy drinkers, I will take the pot smoker every time.

It also doesn't have to be smoked. It can be eaten for the same effect, if people are concerned about their lungs. The reason this is not that common is because you need a larger amount if you are eating it, and of course since it is illegal it is harder to get.

65. Stop this STUPID prohibition NOW.
I don't know who said it on this forum, but they told the truth when they said that Republicans (and not just...THIS ENTIRE COUNTRY, by allowing this to continue...) lives by this rule-

It doesn't matter what you do, it matters who you are, as far as the war on drugs is concerned, at the very least.

Rush, Noelle Bush, Dan Burton's son...

how many examples do we need of the arbitrary nature of this war on drugs??

No, Gore should not have been driving. But that is different than the issue of whether or not marijuana should be legal (and it should be, no doubt, no medical doubt, no legal doubt, no social doubt, if the real and honest evaluations are allowed to frame the public debate, rather than the liars and hypocrites who now control the media message.

Don't waste my tax dollars on the "war on drugs." Put money into treatment for abusers of hard drugs and let the rest of the adults in this country imbibe in marijuana in the same way that adults may also imbibe a glass of wine or beer.

the biggest lie is that marijuana is any more dangerous than alcohol.

73. EQUALITY?????
Isn't it discriminating to plaster Jeb's daughter with her drug problems, and the Bush daughters all over the news with their indiscretions, but not Gore's son? What happened to equality? If Jeb or Duhbya would have made a deal like that, it would have been front page news, and people calling for a special investigation.}(

92. Um...in what world would THAT happen?
The Traitor (aka Bush) is a former (?) cokehead...and yet, where is the front page news on that?

The issue is hypocrisy. Rush "Big Fat Gasbag of Utter Lies and unAmerican Bullshit" Limbaugh gets a pass on Oxycontin, yet Kid Gore's weed - WEED, for crying out loud - is equal to that?

If Young Al was driving stoned, that's a really bad thing, and he should be fairly punished for it - and consider himself lucky no one died. If, that is, the story is as described.

Fuck prohibition, though. Never works, never will. Drugs are only illegal because the government profits more that way.

102. palease
And B. Clinton used drugs. Didn't inhale? BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!
While saying smoking is bad for you, and people should quit/not start, he didn't give up his cigars.
Chelsea, uhhhh, did you know she was smoking? She snuck out of the White House to go party. Geee, partying just like the Bush twins. Why did she get a pass?
Equality isthat both the oxycontin and weed are illegal in the way they were gotten/used.
Why aren't you also mentioning all the hollywood druggies? They are also in the entertainment business like rush.
It only doesn't work because they don't have the will. Let's see, dealing, transporting, smuggling, etc., SHOOT THEM!!!!!

If we use your rationale, Jeb's girl could be excusable for her actions, as she was addicted.
If you make fun of the girls, do so for the guys.

98. No loss, since these elites' kids probably aren't the sort
of material the prisons-industrial complex hopes to build America's future from in any case. Jim Crow Nation's usual selective enforcement of blue laws and arbitrarily decided prohibitions. Al the 3rd needs to learn, along with Prince Harry, Jack Straw's boy, propagandist Limbaugh: do as you will, but be discreet -- or it looks bad when you've acquired multiple violations and aren't in prison, while the browner-complected are slapped into chains routinely.
