Pence clarifies Baghdad remark
Source: Journal Gazette

WASHINGTON – Comparing a market in Baghdad to “a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime” was a poor description, Rep. Mike Pence, R-6th, said Tuesday after returning from a two-day trip to Iraq.

Pence’s remark – made at a news conference in Baghdad on Sunday and widely reported – prompted the New York Times to interview vendors at the market, called Shorja. Many merchants said they don’t feel secure, that the area is dangerous and that they told Pence and the other lawmakers that the market is not safe.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that the group of congressmen headed by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was “buttonholed by merchants and customers who wanted to talk about how unsafe they felt.” But Pence said that didn’t happen. He said the merchants he interacted with only seemed grateful to Americans and couldn’t speak English, anyway.

Nevertheless, Pence said, he shouldn’t have compared the Shorja market to a Hoosier street fair. He said he wasn’t trying to compare the level of security but to describe the layout – outdoor booths with lots of customers milling about.

1. When was the last time a farmer's market in Ft Wayne was hit by mortar fire?
Of all the outrageous statments made by the republican junket that day, Pence's was the most absurd.:eyes:

4. Sadly,
the people of Indiana are too dumb to change. We've yet to get rid of Mark Souder!

6. Backpedaling as fast as he can!

"Clearly, when I said it was like 'a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime,' I meant there were people selling stuff. And there were booths, where the stuff was being sold. Oh, and even though I admit that almost no merchants spoke English, I did not mean to imply that no one in Indiana speaks English. Or something."

9. Another "clarification"
You know, if you guys would just tell the truth the first time, all these "clarifications" wouldn't be necessary. But as usual, the ignorant remark got out and was "widely reported" for two days, providing comfort to the ostrich 30% before being "clarified" to much less attention.
