Guns-at-work bill defeated

Lawmakers say the Virginia Tech tragedy didn't influence them.

By ALEX LEARY and SHANNON COLAVECCHIO-VAN SICKLER
Published April 19, 2007

TALLAHASSEE -- Afterward, nobody said it was about Virginia Tech.

Lawmakers called it a victory for property rights, a triumph of common sense. They insisted the votes they cast Wednesday to defeat a bill to allow employees to keep guns in their cars at work are the same votes they would have cast if not for Virginia Tech.

..cut..
Support for the bill was shaky long before Monday's shootings because it divided two key Republican bases: business and the gun lobby. Many members hoped the issue would just go away and they would not have to side with one or the other.

3. The CEOs and executives who fund the GOP are afraid of their own employees.
That's what this boils down to.

5. That makes a great deal of sense. I'll bet that's exactly it!

And if I were one of them, and treated my employees the way these people believe in doing - no raises, cutbacks, pay reductions, crony firings and hirings, outsourcing, peeling away benefits and pensions, whittling away at workers' rights and protections, forbidding union activism or breaking unions altogether, while I gave myself repeated king's ransoms in salary, perks, and bonuses, I might fear MY employees also. Just what you want is more "disgruntled" workers with the means to seek vengeance. Just what you want.

Karma's a bitch, 'eh?

7. It is not just for the safety of the employer
It is also for the safety for co-workers. There are more employees than management and the odds are that too many of the non-management would be injured.

Working in an environment with fellow workers with different personalities can cause major problems. And if an employee is unable to work out their problem they may used extraordinary means to resolve it.
