Gonzales rejects call for his ouster

By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales confronted a fresh Republican call for his resignation Thursday as he struggled to survive a withering, bipartisan Senate attack on his credibility in the case of eight fired prosecutors.

"The best way to put this behind us is your resignation," Sen. Tom Coburn (news, bio, voting record) bluntly told Gonzales — one GOP conservative to another — at a daylong Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Gonzales disagreed and told the Oklahoma senator he didn't know that his departure would put the controversy to rest. "I am committed to working with you in trying to restore the faith and confidence you need to work with me," he said.

The exchange punctuated a long day in the witness chair for the attorney general, who doggedly advanced a careful, lawyerly defense of the dismissals of the federal prosecutors. He readily admitted mistakes, yet told lawmakers he had "never sought to deceive them," and added he would make the same firings decision again.

2. I do not recall -- 74 times!
Even Reagan had a better memory. As Shumer said afterwards, all of this obfuscation is pointing to the White House.

7. haha.........good one!
and in response to the original article, if he would still do the same thing today as he did in the past, clearly he is not willing to do much to restore confidence in him.

I mean if he would do the same thing all over again, how would that change people's opinions about him? Answer: it wouldn't!!

5. If my employer wanted my "ouster," I'd be powerless to "reject" it.
But Gonzo doesn't represent or serve the people of the country. His sole duty is to do the bidding of bush/rove and carry on with their democratic voter suppression/caging schemes, as well as plant their unqualified born-again "graduates" from Regents, all "loyal bushies," as deeply as possible.

These guys should be swinging from lamp posts.

6. "At the end of the day I know I did not do anything improper,"
Doesn't he mean to say, "At the end of the day I won't recall that I did anything improper"?

10. There is no Rule Of Law That Governs these people.
At least not in their minds, and they will continue to operate that way, until they are stopped.

This country needs to be aware of what is happening to it.
