Wash. gov. signs domestic partner bill
Source: AP

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire signed into law Saturday a measure to create domestic partnerships, giving gay and lesbian couples some of the same rights that come with marriage.

The law creates a domestic partnership registry and provides enhanced rights for same-sex couples, including hospital visitation rights, the ability to authorize autopsies and organ donations and inheritance rights when there is no will.

"It offers the hope that one day, all lesbian and gay families will be treated truly equal under the law," said state Sen. Ed Murray, who is one of five openly gay lawmakers in the Legislature.

To be registered, couples have to share a home, not be married or in a domestic relationship with someone else and be at least 18.

3. Equal or forget it
I am sure the "coloreds" in the old south were supposed to be happy with the pipe dripping water while the "non-coloreds" had a cooled drinking fountain.

I am gay and these types of laws make me so angry. It's got to be full equality or bust.

4. That's counterproductive
These sorts of attitudes will result in much more harm than good. It's a cutting off your nose to spite your face situation, and will only cause more suffering in the GLBT community.

btw: Oregon's governor is about to sign similar legislation

5. Screw this crawling shit. My kid has to go from nothing to walking,
or I'm disowning him!

It's frustrating, but small steps are the way to get things accomplished. Patience is necessary.

6. That's offensive
We are talking about rights of fellow citizens, not physical functioning. Please do not demean my wanting equal rights to everyone else who pays taxes and lives a productive life in this country.

Perhaps some are happy with seperate but equal. I am NOT. Half measures only do more to appease those who want us gay people to be less than fully equal. If I have to cut off my nose, fine, but I hope to save face rather than hide my face as a less than equal American.

I am sick of this crap of appeasement. Who else should we give lesser rights by statute? These statutes and the above comments are offensive. I will not be unequal.
