Al-Qaeda plans 'Hiroshima' attack
Source: Daily Telegraph

AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first "large-scale" terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.

Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on "a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki" in an attempt to "shake the Roman throne", a reference to the West, according to The Times newspaper in the UK.

Another plot could be timed to coincide with Tony Blair stepping down as prime minister, an event described by Al-Qaeda planners as a "change in the head of the company". The report, produced earlier this month and seen by The Sunday Times, appears to provide evidence that Al-Qaeda is active in Iran and has ambitions far beyond the improvised attacks it has been waging against British and American soldiers in Iraq.

It follows revelations last year that up to 150 Britons had travelled to Iraq to fight as part of Al-Qaeda’s "foreign legion". A number are thought to have returned to the UK, after receiving terrorist training, to form sleeper cells. The report was compiled by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) - based at MI5’s London headquarters - and provides a quarterly review of the international terror threat to Britain.

All connected at the roots, indeed.

When things get tough, Rover plays the mushroom cloud card.

Some enterprising graphic artist could come up with a bush/cheney Tarot deck and make a modest fortune.

17. "Al-Qaeda is active in Iran" -- WTH?
This is as startling as a report I heard on CNN Sunday afternoon claiming that Iran are lending support to the TALIBAN. Why would Iran, a Shia state, aid Sunni extremists?? -- people who'd just as soon cut their throats as ours?

Or is the implication rather that al-Qaeda are operating with impunity in Iran? (Also a bit hard to believe.)

31. In Russian, Kasparov is a liberal that's organized against Putin.
However, with him are unreconstructed Communists that carry Soviet flags when they marched with him. He's worked at getting the hammer and sickle dropped from his parades, but the people are still there (just with sickle-less placards).

You'd think that those that view Putin as an extreme liberal and those that view Putin as a neo-Stalinist would have nothing in common. But you'd be wrong.

Both seriously want to get rid of Putin.

Isn't that the one where Chas Heston takes Kate Winslet for a chariot ride before going off to make war against the Babylonians armed with only an AK-47 and the ten commandments tucked in his tunic?

"Come, we go find our oil!"

Seriously, it wouldn't be a stretch for al-Qaeda to make an allusion to the Roman Empire in reference to us. But it isn't definitive. I'm waiting for the Evil Empire jab, then we'll know for sure the GOP's behind it.

55. Yes, but "more than Iraq" isn't saying much
...seeing as Iraq had NO ties to al-Qaeda. The only thing Iran seems to be guilty of is letting al-Qaeda operatives pass through their country, but there's no evidence the Iranian government gave them any support or protection...that doesn't originate from the Bush** propaganda mill.

Friend of my friend? Could be. But there's more reason to believe this is just convenient bs.

63. True that
I'm 99.9999% sure this is just BS proganda & hype. But it does seem like there was an actual British intelligence report about Al-Queda seeking a new attack. (however flawed & hyped that report may be). Bob Baer, the CIA operative who said Cheney was making up flawed Iraqi WMD evidence, has also suggested that Iran might be playing a role in some of the Al-Queda attacks. I've got no idea if this is true, but since he's seemed pretty independent & informed, it made me at least consider the possibility.

They threw in everything but the 45 minute notice.

So Ahmadinejad's Iran is supposedly in on an al-Qaeda plot
to attack a Western city on a "Hiroshima" scale, either
through acquiescence or active support. That's a mighty
impressive feat for a country with no working nukes.

If you believe any of this, maybe I can sell you the

38. Read the Orignial Article
This story reports on a story run in The Sunday Times so it makes sense to find that story.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1687360.ece
...

The report says there is “no indication” this attack would specifically target Britain, “although we are aware that AQI . . . networks are active in the UK”.

...

“It could be just a reference to a huge explosion,” said a counter-terrorist source. “They have got to do something soon that is radical otherwise they start losing credibility.”

Despite aspiring to a nuclear capability, Al-Qaeda is not thought to have acquired weapons grade material. However, several plots involving “dirty bombs” - conventional explosive devices surrounded by radioactive material - have been foiled.

Last year Al-Qaeda’s leader in Iraq called on nuclear scientists to apply their knowledge of biological and radiological weapons to “the field of jihad”.

...

52. If it was genuine 'leaked' intelligence
one would expect a huge investigation into the apparent breach in security procedures and prosecutions such as those instigated recently against Keogh and O'Connor over the contents of Blair's Iraq memo.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article1674437.ece

Instead, the official position is no comment. This means that the story has almost certainly been placed into the media with government connivance.

Edited on Tue Apr-24-07 04:05 PM by CBHagman
From what I've heard, the Bush administration really has fallen down on the job concerning securing nuclear weapons, notably with Russia. This is no joke. It's not something you want to play with.

And our "ally" Pakistan had a virtual nuclear supermarket going in the form of A.Q. Khan. Guess one place where al Qaeda has been hanging out? Yes, in Pakistan...

And don't think that various groups and nations don't want to get nuclear weapons and other WMDs. The Bush administration has lost ground in this regard, and the next administration had damn well better have a different attitude in that regard.

41. If the people running the government really took these threats seriously,
why aren't they working overtime to locate and guard all the loose nuclear weapons floating around the old Soviet bloc? I'm a lot more worried about those than about a weapon that might be made if someone e er accumulates enough weapons grade plutonium. The worst part? There probably are terrorists planning a nuclear attack, but Cheney wiped out one of our best means of keeping them away from nuclear munitions when he outed Valerie Plame!

Because frankly, this administration has created SO much anger, destruction and chaos in the world. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if some of these groups could get their hands on some old russion nukes. It's not like our government is actually paying any fucking attention to anything but completely screwing up the middle east.

I hope nothing happens, but honestly, I have zero confidence in their ability to keep us safe and if some groups wants payback then it will be american citizens that will pay the price.

Let me also say I don't live in fear, I just acknowledge that destruction in the middle east is making us far less safe.
