Copperas Cove man to give president his Purple Heart
Source: Killeen Daily Herald

History will be made today when Copperas Cove resident Bill Thomas and his wife, Georgia, present President George W. Bush with a Purple Heart at the Oval Office.

Thomas said he and his wife came up with the unprecedented idea to present the president with the Purple Heart over breakfast one morning a few months ago as they discussed the verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chief has withstood during his time in office.

"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds," Thomas said.

<snip>

He has drawn criticism from some locals who have learned of his actions, Thomas said. Nevertheless, he said he earned the Purple Heart and it is his to do with it as he sees fit.

6. Well honestly
After how these freeper-types have degraded any man of honor, namely John Kerry with their bandaids, etc...the medal has been tarnished.
This just completes the devaluing.
What kind of insane world gives an dry drunk AWOL soldier a Purple Heart?

37. He got it in Vietnam, not Iraq.
Here's a later story in the Cove Herald about the actual presentation.

http://www.thecoveherald.com/page3.html

------------------------------------
"We were just absolutely bowled over. Without reservation, it was one of the highlights of our life. He was such a gracious host," Thomas said. "It was just an incredible, incredible experience."

The couple was able to meet with President Bush for about 20 minutes to present him with one of three Purple Hearts that Bill Thomas received during his service in Vietnam.

"He said he didn't feel like he had earned it," Thomas said, noting the president looked thinner in person than on television.

The Thomases also were able to meet Barney, the president's Scottish terrier, and tour the White House Rose Garden.
------------------------------------

What a pair of delusional twits.

126. You know what pisses me off the most?
A man of decency, honor and integrity would never have accepted a Purple Heart Medal that honors troops who have spilled blood in battle for so-called "wounds of an emotional nature".

Here's a clue George. When someone tries to give you something you don't fucking deserve, you politely decline the gift.

George accepted this medal, because somewhere in his black, foul, putrid, cold, diseased heart....he really believes he fucking deserves it.

After all, he did tell us the "presidentin' is hard werk".

Why don't you take that fucking Purple Heart and give it to the widow of the soldier who fucking hanged himself at Walter Reed, you sick-fuck!?

16. Any harsh words which have come Bush's way were more than deserved a very long time ago.
"emotional wounds and scars???"

The man could not conduct himself as he does if he were easily injured by righteous outrage from the human race.

Bill Thomas is desperately disoriented. He shouldn't be operating heavy machinery, or baby sitting any kids.

He should also step away from his Fox TV News, and re-acquaint himself with reading.

First off, I don't think he gives a damn about any criticism. He seems to have a thick, impenetrable shell when it comes to media critiques.

But if he was insulted, he deserved it.

Not too many get to stand in front of him and deliver that criticism. But the few times it's happened, it was for richly deserved reasons.

If this AWOL son of a bitch goes through with this publicity stunt I will not be able to contain my revulsion. He wouldn't even come out of his bunker house when Max Clelland came to Crawford to talk to him but yet he will accept this medal that is normally presented to people who earned it. This asshole has not a bit of shame and there is no limit to how low he will stoop if he perceives it might gain him some advantage. Well, in my eyes this has backfired on him big time.

43. Maybe Senator Kerry Should Award It to Bush
One earned it and the other got it in a photo op. It demeans the whole honor behind receiving a purple heart. The logic goes beyond any understanding. The donor is pathetic and has lost any respect he may have earned from getting the heart in the first place. Like getting wounded saving a pal and then committing treason later on. Just an insult to all who received this honor through bravery in action.

This doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It is like giving your university parchment to a non-graduate, because he strikes you as a pretty smart guy. Sure, you can transfer ownership of a piece of paper (or metal), but the title doesn't go along with it.

ask a veteran who EARNED his or her Purple Heart how they feel about this. I'd be willing to bet my salary this year that you'd be hard pressed to find a majority that supports this action.

The FBI investigates individuals on fraudulent military awards all the time. This one bears no differently in my opinion.

A gift from some misguided kool-aid drinkers! And Bush asked that it be "awarded" in person.

Thomas said he drew up a citation and he and his wife signed it before dropping it and the medal off with Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, to forward to President Bush.

Carter later called Thomas to inform him that the president was very moved by the gesture and would like the couple to present it in person.

64. I didn't know they gave the Purple Heart for self inflicted
Edited on Mon Apr-23-07 08:14 PM by jamesinca
I thought one was more likely to be punished for a self inflicted wound, not given a medal.

"verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chief has withstood during his time in office.

'We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds,' Thomas said."

On the other hand, will this rat bastard think of giving a medal to President Clinton for all of the attacks Clinton took, ones not self inflicted or invited?

65. My grandpa served 46 months in WWII.
He was in the South Pacific, slept in a foxhole most nights. When daylight came in the mornings, they found out who had gotten their throats slashed or their brains beaten out during the night. They adopted the strategy of sleeping (if you call it sleep) with their helmets at their feet, because the enemy would creep in and feel for the helmet to locate the head. My grandpa had his foot broken one night in this manner. He didn't get a purple heart, never heard him mention a purple heart. I doubt he felt like he deserved one in light of the atrocities inflicted upon others during his years spent there.

I cannot find the words to express how this story makes me feel when I consider the multitudes of people who made sacrifice after sacrifice for our country. Just when I thought my opinion of someone could sink no lower...

Obviously this poor guy suffered brain damage in that battle.

I'm deeply sorry for all those vets who earned their Purple Hearts through service to their country, though. I hope they don't feel that Thomas' thoughtless presentation besmirches the honor justly given to them.

The couple was able to meet with President Bush for about 20 minutes to present him with one of three Purple Hearts that Bill Thomas received during his service in Vietnam.

"He said he didn't feel like he had earned it," Thomas said, noting the president looked thinner in person than on television.

So, they quietly send him the medal, and he decides to use it as a publicity stunt. No surprise there.

Thomas said he drew up a citation and he and his wife signed it before dropping it and the medal off with Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, to forward to President Bush.

"Congressman Carter called me last week and said the President was very moved by it, and would like us to present it in person," Thomas said.

134. I'm totally confused
Mr. Thomas claims that all the "verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic" that Shrub has brought on to himself since he stole the White House have caused Bush emotional wounds and scars.

If Bush was a normal human being, being called everything from chimpanzee through war criminal to terrorist and mass murderer probably would wear him down. It would have to. Bush, however, is the most expressed psychopath in American history. That shit hasn't affected Shrub in the slightest.

Besides, they don't give the Purple Heart for emotional wounds, mainly because anyone who goes near a combat zone has them. It's a medal for people who the enemy put holes in.

And do they speak out against people like Coulter and others of her ilk? Yet, people like Dixie Chicks get crucified while exercising their free speech. That's what I'd like to know.

:D On edit, I realized that this wasn't the clearest post ever - what I'm saying is, the guy in the story says that Bush has been criticized and that he feels this has probably impacted him negatively. Does it occur to people like him that criticizing Linda Rondstat and Natalie Maines and Michael Moore ALSO hurts THEM, and they didn't even declare war on bad intelligence - they were just expressing their minds. Do they also deserve purple hearts??
