House panel approves subpoena for Rice

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

WASHINGTON - In rapid succession, congressional committees Wednesday ramped up their investigations of the Bush administration by approving a subpoena for Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice and granting immunity to a key aide to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
.............

Moments earlier in the committee chamber next door, the
House Judiciary Committee voted 32-6 to grant immunity to Monica Goodling, Gonzales' White House liaison, for her testimony on why the administration fired eight federal prosecutors. The panel also unanimously approved — but did not issue — a subpoena to compel her to appear.

Simultaneously across Capitol Hill, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved — but did not issue — a subpoena on the prosecutors' matter to Sara Taylor, deputy to presidential adviser Karl Rove.

18. they have said they would not go straight to subpoena
And they are not. They are being decent and allowing this admin to tell congress to go Cheney itself first. Then the subpoenas are issued and I think that is how it should be done. Show up and testify or say no and be subpoenaed their choice.

There's only 635 days until Bush gets away with his crimes. If we're gonna bring impeachment charges against him, we have to move on any opportunities we get.

37. I agree to an extent
There is a sense of urgency, but to just put subpoenas out there because they can I don't like or agree with. The Republic party did that with Clinton, I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Only good that came out of those calls to testify is this, Bush lied when he said it was unprecedented to call such high level officials to speak before congress. As Newt later said, it was just good ol partisan fun and games. We are sure we have everything to justify removal from office are we not. The republic party was sure they had that on Clinton and guess what, they didn't. Urgency yes, caution yes. Congress needs to do many late nights making sure they have their ducks in a row. That will give us the urgency and caution that are needed. I don't want these bastards getting away on a technicality and I don't want our party coming away looking like idiots that are full of hate and revenge.

13. On the uranium issue, Rice's allies maintained that she has for years ........

......On the uranium issue, Rice's allies maintained that she has for years answered Congress' questions under oath, as well as media inquiries, about her knowledge of the veracity of Bush's claim about uranium.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., said Rice was "giving us no choice but to proceed with a subpoena."

Even as he pressed ahead on Rice, Waxman postponed a vote on issuing a subpoena to former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card on the same issue, saying White House Counsel Fred Fielding had made a compromise proposal worth pursuing. Under it, the committee would first talk to the White House office of administration about Card's knowledge of the uranium claim.

On the prosecutor firings, the House Judiciary Committee approved two measures that would compel Goodling's testimony and grant her immunity from prosecution. The immunity grant only would take effect if Conyers signs and issues the subpoena to Goodling, he said.

28. I'm not convinced she will go that route again
Considering that there has been evidence brought to light that they should well have anticipated such things. But then you never know with this bunch, they do tend to get stuck in a rut and find it difficult to pull themselves back out of them often.

33. House Panel Seeks to Force Rice to Testify on Iraq Claims
Source: NYT

WASHINGTON, April 25 — A House committee voted this afternoon to authorize a subpoena of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as it presses an inquiry into the claims, long since discredited, that Iraq sought uranium from Niger.

The vote by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform was 21 to 10. All the “yes” votes were cast by Democrats, and all the “no” votes by Republicans.

The vote to subpoena Ms. Rice, coupled with a vote by the House Judiciary Committee vote a short time earlier to grant immunity to a former Justice Department official involved in the dismissals of eight United States attorneys, reflect the new power of Democrats as they fulfill their desire to subject the Bush administration to closer scrutiny than it had in the years that Republicans were in control.

But the oversight committee chairman, Representative Henry A. Waxman, Democrat of California, said before the vote that he took no pleasure in authorizing a subpoena against the Secretary of State.

“For four years, I have been trying to get information from Condoleezza Rice on a variety of issues, including the reference to uranium and Niger in the president’s 2003 State of the Union speech,” Mr. Waxman said, alluding to the assertion that preceded the American-led military campaign that toppled Saddam Hussein.

39. Actually, I think granting Goodling immunity
and approving a subpoena for her is bigger news than approving a subpoena for Rice. I think Goodling's testimony could be very damaging to the White House, while Rice's will probably be SSDD.
