US troops seize gang smuggling bombs from Iran
Source: AFP

US forces on Friday detained four members of a gang suspected of smuggling armour-piercing bombs from Iran to Iraq and sending back militants for "terrorist training", the military said.

"The individuals targeted during the raid are suspected members of a secret cell terrorist network known for facilitating the transport of weapons and explosively formed penetrators, or EFPs, from Iran to Iraq," it said.

The EFP is a form of roadside bomb in which the detonation of an explosive charge inside a steel tube causes a copper disk to deform into a fist-sized chunk of supersonic molten metal that can scythe through armoured vehicles.

American commanders say the design is exclusively Iranian and in January alleged that at least 170 US troops had been killed by EFPs since May 2004. The statement also said that the gang had sent "militants from Iraq to Iran for terrorist training".

8. That is sad
I really wish it to be true that this will help our American troops come home whole and uninjured.

Sadly the lies, distortions and disinformation that have come out of this adminstration, and also out of the Pentagon makes one suspicious of any of their claims. We've been fooled more than once and it is always to make them look good even if it costs our country more blood and money and credibility.

10. Yeah but if you are like me you actually have to ward off the feeling ...
that someday they may actually be telling the truth about something. It does affect you or I should say ME like that but to date I haven't seen anything that stands up to some inspection from this crowd.

14. If the weapons were heading to Shiite factions, then yes believe it, but
if they were headed to Sunni insurgents, don't believe it. The Bush Admin thinks Sunni and Shiites are the same.

6. The EFPs are driving the military nuts
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 01:08 PM by jmc247
Because you don't have to place them under a target. They are placed on the side of the road and the shoot metal at high speeds at the target. They are an ingenious little piece of equipment.

15. It's certainly in Iran's interest to bloody our nose.
Frankly, I find it very easy to believe. If Iran were fighting in Mexico, I have no doubt America would do what it could to undermine their efforts.

17. There are some in ( Sunni ) Saudi Arabia that are upset about the power shift in Iraq.
Balance of power that the Sunni minority of Iraq held is gone in favor of the majority Shia. That is a "slap in the face" of a wahibist prince or two. They will turn the other cheek when Saudis want to jihad in Iraq but get to demanding for change at home and they turn out their own as seen in recent articles.

20. It is hard to believe everything you read
lies from administration are certainly not uncommon. Still, I have no reason to believe this isn't true. It's seems very reasonable that these weapons would be coming from Iran. But in what capacity and too what extent? This certainly does not mean Iran is officially and pro-actively arming every Iraqi insurgency, but may mean that Iran is simply not pro-actively trying to prevent it, either. That being said, this will likely be blown out of context Bush admin. and used to fuel anti-Iran sentiments .

21. OMG, the country of Iraq is awash in munitions, there's no need to smuggle them in from Iran.
Dumb-a**es who believe such propaganda need to read alternative news sources.

Remember in our rush to secure the Oil Fields, our troops did NOT secure large ammunition storage areas throughout IRAQ?
