MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday warned that US plans to deploy an anti-missile system in eastern Europe sharply increase the danger of mutual destruction.

...

"The threat of causing mutual damage and even destruction increases many times," Putin said after a meeting with Czech President Vaclav Klaus in Moscow, Interfax and ITAR-TASS news agencies reported.

He scorned Washington's claim that the role of the US interceptor missiles would be to shoot down missiles from countries such as Iran or North Korea, rather than from Russia. "Neither terrorists, whom they are preparing to defend against, nor Iran, nor North Korea have such a system," Putin said. "To talk of terrorists is simply hilarious. They use other methods."

Moscow's opposition to the US deployment is steadily hardening, fuelling East-West tensions already heightened over differences on independence for Kosovo, Putin's record on democracy, and Russian energy export policies.

1. Mutually assured destruction is the standing nuclear policy.
We can all kill each other so we don't.

Did Putin sleep in class just like George?

2. I think you don't get it
General dumbfuck's move to install missiles near the Russian border renders the (mad) concept of MAD useless. It would give the US a strategic advance, because with these installations the US can destroy Russian missiles over European territory instead of fearing that they reach the US. Furthermore the US can use these weapons of mass destruction to ATTACK Russia. Who can guarantee the Russians, that the missiles in the polish silos are really defense weapons, which aren't directed against Russia?

The saddest part of this whole story is that US taxpayer's money is transferred into the pockets of the disgusting CEOs of military industrial complex. Bush, Cheney and the rest of the criminal gang in the White House should be indicted for this crime alone. Right after they get sentenced for the brutal war of aggression against the Iraqi people.

over there doesn't even want to know): the "don't blink first" MAD situation is still very much REALITY. No shit.

(And, very welcome to DU to you).

edit: Some people just don't understand any language, other than to hold a well-oiled weapon, in well-trained, responsible hands, finger on trigger and safety (if necessary) -off, right up close to their heads. HELLO?

3. I looked the man in the eye and I was able to get a sense of his soul
Bush's advisers say the key to his attitude adjustment regarding Putin was the two leaders' first encounter, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, last June; Bush decided within two hours of meeting him that Putin was a man he could trust. Bush's remarks--"I looked the man in the eye," he said, and "I was able to get a sense of his soul"--elicited snickers from journalists and grimaces from his advisers, who feared Bush was swooning over Putin the way they had accused Clinton of falling for Yeltsin. Former Clintonites rolled their eyes at the irony. "I've known Putin for seven years," says Sandy Berger, who held Rice's job under Clinton. "I've looked him in the eye many times. And all I've ever seen is him looking back at me."

4. well, lets imagine...
...that Putin wants to put "missle defense" in Mexico and Canada, or Cuba....what kind of reaction we would have in the US? i mean if ANYONE wasn't expecting tension and some kind of move on Russia's part, they must be the ones that are still waiting greetings in Baghdad with flowers...
