Washington - Sen. Herb Kohl will push the U.S. Justice Department for answers to questions about federal prosecutor Steven M. Biskupic in Milwaukee after the department missed deadlines to turn over documents and shed light on reports that the attorney was considered for dismissal but spared, a Kohl aide said Friday.
Two deadlines have been blown:
• Kohl asked U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at a much-watched Senate hearing April 19 to let him know within a week why Biskupic reportedly was on, and later off, a firing list.
• Kohl and fellow Wisconsin Democrat Sen. Russ Feingold asked Gonzales in a letter April 10 for documents showing whether Biskupic had been considered for dismissal after President Bush's re-election.
Biskupic, 46, has been U.S. attorney for the state's Eastern District since 2002. A career prosecutor, he joined the office in 1989. He wasn't available for comment Friday.
