Protest in Afghan east after civilian deaths

Thousands of people, some shouting "Death to America" and carrying shrouded bodies, protested in the east of Afghanistan on Sunday after up to six people were killed during a raid by US-led coalition forces.

Nangahar province police spokesman Abdul Ghafur said the six dead were all civilians, including three women.

But the US military said four of those killed were Taliban fighters, while a woman and a teenage girl had died in crossfire.

Neighbours of the dead who took part in the protest said five people died, including two women, with only a young girl surviving from the family.

1. Afghans Protest After U.S. Raid Death
Hundreds of angry protesters chanting ``Death to Bush'' demonstrated in eastern Afghanistan after six people - including a woman and a teenage girl - were reportedly killed when U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces raided a suspected car bomb cell early Sunday.

The U.S. said four militants were among the dead, but it was the civilian deaths that infuriated the protesters, who carried five bodies to a main highway and blocked traffic with felled trees during the demonstration. The bodies of the women were entirely covered by sheets, while the men's faces were revealed.

Afghan officials have repeatedly pleaded with the United States and NATO to take care during operations that might harm civilians, and the latest violence is sure to deepen distrust among Afghans, whose support for international forces and the shaky U.S.-backed government is waning.

``It is extremely unfortunate that militants put others' lives in danger by hiding among their families,'' said U.S. Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman.

2. Protest in Afghan east after civilian deaths
Source: Reuters

KABUL, April 29 (Reuters) - Hundreds of Afghans, some shouting "Death to America", protested in the east on Sunday after six people were killed during a raid by U.S.-led coalition forces.

Nangahar police spokesman Abdul Ghafur said the six dead were all civilians, including three women, but the U.S. military said four of those killed were Taliban fighters and that two women civilians died in crossfire.

The military said the early Sunday morning raid had targeted a car bomb cell when its soldiers came under fire.

Angry demonstrators blocked a main road near the provincial capital, Jalalabad, with tree branches.

Some also chanted "Death to Karzai", referring to President Hamid Karzai who is seen by some Afghans as too close to his Western allies.

Afghans protest deaths in U.S.-led raid

By RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writer 59 minutes ago

KABUL, Afghanistan - A U.S.-led raid Sunday on a suspected militant cell killed as many as six Afghans — including a woman and a teenage girl — and spawned protests by hundreds of angry Afghans chanting "Death to Bush!"

The U.S. said four militants were among the dead, but it was the civilian deaths that infuriated the protesters, who carried five bodies to a main highway and blocked traffic with felled trees during the demonstration. The bodies of the women were entirely covered by sheets, while the men's faces were revealed.

"Their operation was based on incorrect reports, and they carried out a cruel attack on these houses," said local resident Akhtar Mohammad at the protest. "We are not the enemy, we are not al-Qaida. Why are they attacking us?"

Afghan officials have repeatedly pleaded with the United States and
NATO to take care during operations that might harm civilians, and the latest violence is sure to deepen distrust among Afghans, whose support for international forces and the shaky U.S.-backed government is waning.
