Irish parliament dissolved, elections set for May 24 (1st Lead)
By DPA

Dublin - Irish President Mary McAleese on Sunday dissolved the Irish parliament paving the way for new elections in the European Union country on May 24.

The move came at the request of incumbent Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who has been in office for two five-year terms.

Ahern's Fianna Fail party has been dominant in the country for decades, but is bracin for a tough battle, with opinion polls indicating no party garnering a clear majority in the next parliament, to convene on June 14.

1. Given the way Ireland has changed
and the consciousness that is apparent throughout Ireland these days, I would suspect nothing less than seeing Fianna Fail go up in smoke and the Fine Gael or a left-leaning Labour party taking over.

This is needed badly as they are building freeways and all sorts of huge buildings all over the island and having little if any respect for what archaeological evidence might be found in the bogs. It truly is insane and really going way too far too fast. The environment is not being respected by those now in power there I believe and the citizens are quite aware of it and not happy about it either, especially the older people which are now becoming few.

As for Ahern, he is not very popular in Ireland, I do know that much.

We shall see soon enough.
