Rice redefines 'imminent threat'
Source: RawStory

On ABC's morning program "This Week," host George Stephanopoulos asks Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice if Iraq ever posed an "imminent threat" to the United States.

"I think that -- an imminent threat. Certainly Iraq posed a threat," Rice replied. "The question was, was it going to get worse over time or was it going to get better."

...

"But not an imminent threat," presses Stephanopoulous.

"George, the question of imminence isn't whether or not someone will strike tomorrow, it's whether you believe you're in a stronger position today to deal with the threat or whether you're going to be in a stronger position tomorrow," replies Rice. "It was the president's assessment that the situation in Iraq was getting worse from our point of view."

2. Going by that reasoning, then global warming is also an imminent threat.
And yet, they don't give a rat's ass about it.

3. Not really
She said "according to the president".

So in Condiland, the president's opinion is the determinant factor.

5. Isn't Condi pretty much irrelevant, now?
I mean, she has been exposed as a liar, kinda stupid (despite all the hype), and a piss-poor manager, as the State Dept. has become a cesspool under her "leadership".

Certainly she has no relevance as a Secretary of State, and the world seems to know it.

I guess George S. was trying to use her as a foil for his attempt to become relevant again, himself?

Anyway, thanks for the link. I don't watch any of these shows anymore.

8. Rice is an accomplice to murder of 3300+ of our troops and tens of
thousands of innocent Iraqis. They lied us into this war and don't give a damn about the death and destruction. Only the stupidest 28% of this Nation can believe the lies and re-fabrications. I was a military planner and based on Rice's logic, we should invade every country on Earth. I hope I have witnessed the low point of national leadership in my lifetime. I can't imagine a more brazen, criminal gang than the Bush corporate mafia.

9. Oh this is pretty bad. It's going to have far-reaching global consequences.
I mean, leaving some sort of wiggle room is one thing. Explicitly saying in her capacity as Secretary of State that the US has officially changed its definition of "imminent threat" under international law theory to take the issue of immediateness out of the equation, as the official policy of the most powerful member of the community of nations, this is not good.

12. Dictionary definition of "imminent," in other words: Condi, do you really have a PhD?
Did Condi fake her resume? If she didn't, how can she pretend she does not know what 'imminent' means?

Main Entry: im·mi·nent
Pronunciation: 'i-m&-n&nt
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin imminent-, imminens, present participle of imminEre to project, threaten, from in- + -minEre (akin to Latin mont-, mons mountain) -- more at MOUNT

: ready to take place; especially : hanging threateningly over one's head <was in imminent danger of being run over>

- im·mi·nent·ly adverb

13. I'm stunned.
It's clever, in a devilish kind of way. Diabolical. The definition of imminent threat now residing in the level of preparedness of the target.

Does that mean that the criminal laws regarding self defense must be re-written?

Think about the staggering implications for prosecutions and defense.

That assessment was utterly, incontrovertibly, 100% WRONG.

Did Condi just call Bush incompetent?

19. I think the only thing he is capable of is
deciding if he needs another drink or not and whether the bottle is 'in imminent danger' of being empty.

Heard him on tv the other night and the boy's slurring words pretty good - either that or his dentures are loose from all the bj's to whoever his 'journalist' is this week.

Just because a person has an advanced degree from a prestigious institution, that doesn't necessarily mean they have the common sense to come in out of the rain, or that they know when they are talking absolute and abject nonsense. Dangerous nonsense, at that.

What she and others in the Bush administration fail to realize is that their endorsement of the doctrine of preemptive strike can come back to bite them -- and all of us -- square in the ass.

26. So, essentially, any country can be considered an "imminent threat"...
... if hypothetically someday in the future they could pose some kind of hypothetical threat to the US, and the only determining factor in terms of going to war is if * feels inclined to go.

The reasoning basically becomes, "* wanted to invade Iraq".
