CNN6 die in Basra explosion; bombs at all-girls' school defused
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- An explosion in southern Iraq late Sunday killed six people and wounded several others, a U.S. military statement released Monday said.
The blast took place in the Al Hiyyaniya district of Basra, around 10:20 p.m. (2:20 p.m. ET).
"Coalition Forces indicate this explosion is likely to have been an accidental detonation during movement and transportation of explosives in an automobile," the statement said.
According to the military, the Al Hiyyaniya District of Basra is under the influence of radical Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's Mehdi Army militia, which is says "intimidates local people to further its own agenda."
Separately, Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldiers defused a series of explosive devices planted at an all-girls' school in Tarmiya, north of the Iraqi capital, on Saturday, another U.S. military statement said. An explosives ordnance disposal team transported all of the rounds from the school for disposal.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed three street cleaners on Sunday in the Adhamiya district of northern Baghdad, police said.
