G8 set for transatlantic clash on climate
Source: Reuters

By Jeremy Lovell

LONDON (Reuters) - The United States is trying to dilute a declaration on global warming to be made at next month's G8 summit, sources close to the talks said on Friday, putting it on a collision course with hosts Germany.

In a draft of the declaration dated April 2007 seen by Reuters, the United States objects to a pledge to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius this century and cut world greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

Washington also questions whether the United Nations is the best forum to tackle the climate crisis and rejects a section stating that carbon markets are a key means of developing and deploying climate-friendly technologies.

"They have rejected any mention of targets and timetables, don't want the U.N. to get more involved and refuse to endorse carbon trading because it must by definition involve targets," one well-placed source said on condition of anonymity.

2. They don't want targets. They don't want timetables. Truth is, they
don't want ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY.

This nation is being run by spoiled, rich teenagers.

Riot police have clashed with demonstrators in Hamburg after the offices and apartments of left-wing activists were raided.

Some 900 federal and local police officers searched about 40 premises used by several anti-globalist groups, who police believed were planning to disrupt next month's Group of Eight (G8) summit.

Following the raids around two thousand demonstrators hit the streets in Hamburg with some firing flares and throwing bottles at riot police. In response water cannons were used as two police officers were injured and several protesters arrested.

Fears about violence at G8 summits has become commonplace with the meeting in 2001 in Genoa, Italy, being particularly notorious as police and protesters clashed in the streets for days.

Security officials also announced tighter border controls aimed at stopping troublemakers from entering Germany during the June 6-8 summit in the northern resort town of Heiligendamm.

German security officials have also built a fence costing approximately £8.5 million around the resort hoping to keep protesters away from the event, hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel
