Iraq withdrawal move thwarted in Senate
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday rejected legislation that would cut off money for combat operations in Iraq after March 31, 2008.

The vote was a loss for Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., and other Democrats who want to end the war. But the effort picked up support from members, including presidential hopefuls previously reluctant to limit war funding — an indication of the conflict's unpopularity among voters.

The proposal lost 29-67 on a procedural vote, falling 41 votes short of the necessary votes to advance.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Democratic presidential front-runner, previously opposed setting a deadline on the war. But she said she agreed to back the measure "because we, as a united party, must work together with clarity of purpose and mission to begin bringing our troops home and end this war."

Sen. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record), another leading 2008 prospect, said he would prefer a plan that offers more flexibility but wanted "to send a strong statement to the Iraqi government, the president and my Republican colleagues that it's long past time to change course."

1. Just 29 votes?
I didn't expect it to pass and certainly not get cloture but I thought it would come closer than that.

What the hell? We can't even get the Senate Democrats to vote to cut off the damn war?
Here are some new names to add to the list of Democrats that I do not support:
Baucus (MT)
Bayh (IN)
Bingaman (NM)
Carper (DE)
Casey (PA)
Conrad (ND)
Dorgan (ND)
Landrieu (LA)
Levin (MI)
Lincoln (AR)
McCaskill (MO)
Nelson (FL)
Nelson (NE)
Pryor (AR)
Reed (RI)
Rockefeller (WV)
Salazar (CO)
Tester (MT)
Webb (VA)

They are the ones who sided with ALL of the Republicans.

20. Here's a message from our Senate LEADER, Sen. Fine-gold. Thank you & don't stop
Subject: Another Step To End The War...
Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 18:54:39 +0000 (GMT)
Dear Wordpix,

Russ is still on the Senate floor but we want to make sure the
Progressive Patriots community saw his statement following
today's vote on the Feingold-Reid amendment to end the war in
Iraq.

"Today the Senate took another step toward acknowledging the
will of the American people, who want to end this misguided
mission in Iraq. A majority of Senate Democrats are on the
record clearly stating that the President's Iraq policy is a
failure and that we need to take real action to change course.
Keeping 150,000 American troops in the middle of an Iraqi civil
war both hurts our national security and impedes the ability to
reach a political solution in Iraq. We must continue to ratchet
up the pressure on the President and supporters of this
irresponsible war to safely redeploy our troops from Iraq so we
can refocus on those who attacked us on 9/11."

Today's cloture vote on Russ's amendment was an important step
forward in the effort to end this war. Russ was basically all
alone when he first put forward the idea of using Congress's
'power of the purse' to redeploy our troops out of Iraq.
However, with the strong support of the Progressive Patriots
community and Majority Leader Harry Reid, we've come a long way
since he first proposed a target date to end the war in the
summer of 2005.

We are heartened by today's vote - putting a majority of the
Democratic caucus on record calling for a firm and binding end
date for the misguided war in Iraq. Unfortunately, 20 Democrats
still sided with the Republican caucus in approving the status
quo. It's time, once again, to ratchet up the pressure.

Russ and the Progressive Patriots Fund will continue to turn up
the heat, but we need your help. You can find the entire list of
the 67 senators who voted against Feingold-Reid and the four who
didn't vote here. If your senator is on that list, use the form
on our site to let them know exactly what you think about their
vote today.

Click below to see how your senators voted
http://ga1.org/ct/ZdsDNGF1PQ6E/

For those whose senators supported Feingold-Reid this morning,
forward this email to 10 of your friends in different states
whose senators voted against the Feingold-Reid amendment.

The only way we can be successful in ending one of the biggest
mistakes in our nation's history is if we work together. We've
made much progress in recent months, but there is much more work
that needs to be done. I know Russ appreciates your continued
partnership in this fight. Thanks for standing with him in this
effort.

Sincerely,

Trevor Miller

What is up with the Dems who voted against this? What is their rationale? Did anyone talk to their offices and get an excuse why they voted against this bill?

I'm so angry. I can't believe so many of "ours" voted to continue this war, knowing how the American public feels about it and how much money is being squandered to kill innocent Iraqis and American troops!!!!

24. They did not want to send a message that "that Congress does not support " the troops
Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said he opposes any measure that cuts off money for the war.

"We don't want to send the message to the troops" that Congress does not support them, said Levin, D-Mich. "We're going to support those troops."

25. We went from 12 YEA's last summer to 29 YEA's today...
That's over double --- the bright side.

It took 9-10 months more of Shrub's wasteful and reckless war to get there --- way too long!

We can't give up. Maybe the next vote will be double the 29 and in half the time.

Eventually this war will end. Sadly, the cost for it will be felt by our grand children's kids.
