GOP Candidates Criticize ABC News Report on CIA-Iran Plan
Source: ABC News

Two Republican presidential candidates today criticized the ABC News report Tuesday about the CIA's covert plan to destabilize the Iranian regime.

"I was shocked to see the ABC News report regarding covert action in Iran," Mitt Romney said as he opened a session with reporters in Tulsa, Okla.

Congressman Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., called for an investigation into who leaked the information and "condemned" ABC News for "running the story which could jeopardize American lives."

The ABC News story reported that President Bush had given the CIA authorization to conduct a nonlethal covert action against Iran involving propaganda, disinformation and the manipulation of Iran's international banking transactions.

"The reporting has the potential of jeopardizing our national security. To put it quite plainly, it has the potential of affecting human life, we may never know," Romney said.

1. I'm not "shocked" that the GOPigs are crying about being exposed yet again.

It's a bad idea to destabilize Iran.

The Iran Plans

April 17, 2006!!!

The Bush Administration, while publicly advocating diplomacy in order to stop Iran from pursuing a nuclear weapon, has increased clandestine activities inside Iran and intensified planning for a possible major air attack. Current and former American military and intelligence officials said that Air Force planning groups are drawing up lists of targets, and teams of American combat troops have been ordered into Iran, under cover, to collect targeting data and to establish contact with anti-government ethnic-minority groups. The officials say that President Bush is determined to deny the Iranian regime the opportunity to begin a pilot program, planned for this spring, to enrich uranium.

Hersh: Iran In U.S. Crosshairs

Jan. 17, 2005

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Seymour Hersh says President Bush and his national security advisers had been "conducting secret reconnaissance missions inside Iran at least since last summer" for the purpose of gathering intelligence and targeting information.

Pentagon lashes out at Iran claim

January 17 2005

Pentagon officials on Monday lashed out at a US magazine report which claimed they were preparing for possible strikes on Iran by carrying out secret reconnaissance missions inside the country, saying the article contained "fantastic claims" about programmes that do not exist.

....

Lawrence DiRita, the Pentagon's chief spokesman, said in a statement on Monday that many of the facts upon which the story is based are inaccurate. Neither he nor Dan Bartlett, the White House spokesman, commented directly on the commando operations claim, however.

....

It is rare for the Pentagon to issue such a long and detailed response to a single news account; Mr DiRita's two-page statement includes four specific refutations of claims made in the piece, including an alleged post-election meeting between Donald Rumsfeld and the joint chiefs of staff in which the defence secretary claimed the 2004 US election was a referendum on aggressive action in the Middle East.

It is also rare that defence officials single out a specific journalist for such vitriol. In one part of his statement, Mr DiRita appears to accuse Mr Hersh of anti-Semitism. Mr Hersh reported that Douglas Feith, the number three civilian at the Pentagon, has worked with Israeli military planners to find targets in Iran, a claim the Pentagon said built on "the soft bigotry of some conspiracy theorists". Mr Feith is Jewish. The Pentagon said not such contacts exist.

6. American politicians
they're falling all over each other to be the first one to make the phony postulate that American lives are more valuable than other lives.

We must have a crappy school system.

All men are created equal, you stuffed suits!

Whether or not a newscast revealing a covert operation "puts American lives at risk" is secondary to why the covert operation was conducted in the first place!

What hypocrites! Not only do they lie about righteousness, and secretly break the law, but then they act as if they're the victims when their sabotage schemes are exposed!

7. In other words, GOP candidates support a new war front, this time against Iran
Too bad they won't be alone, there are several Democrats that have put "all options on the table" on Iran.

11. Maybe this is what we need
For George Bush to spread the American military so thin that they finally collapse of their own weight.

Sad.

14. My human side wants this war to end today, and the troops to all come home
The cold political side of mine sees the strategic advantage to progressive forces in Latin America of having America's armies bogged down in a losing war in the Middle East.

My paranoid side sees the danger of a repeat in America of the "Who lost the War?" debate in Germany at the end of the Great War. Rather than admit that their own folly was responsible for Germany's defeat, the militarists and fascists blamed the liberals for the war's outcome, setting the stage for the Nazis.
