Republicans Say Quiet Period for Bush Judicial Nominees About to End
Republicans Say Quiet Period for Bush Judicial Nominees About to End
By Jesse J. Holland Associated Press Writer
Published: Jul 22, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) - With the Senate Judiciary Committee ready to approve another controversial nominee, Republicans are preparing one last summertime effort to push President Bush's choices past Democrats determined to stop them.

If Alabama Attorney General William Pryor's nomination makes it to the full Senate on Wednesday, he'll join at least four other nominees likely to be stuck there until after Congress' August recess.

But unlike the last two months, when little was said about the stalled nominations, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., says he won't let the Senate leave for its summer break without addressing some of those nominees.

"Anybody who makes it (out of the Senate Judiciary Committee) will have a good shot of coming up before the recess," Frist said. (snip)

(snip) "We've blocked two, we may block a few more," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., on Tuesday. (snip/...)

2. You go Dems! You've made me proud so far!
For all the bitching about democratic senators here on DU, you have to admit they been fighting hard against these right-wing judges. But we have to keep at the borderline voters: we know who will support the filibusters and who will cave, but we still have some fence sitters including my own Tom Carper (I write him constantly about sticking with the filibuster and so far he has).

We cannot let this die, we cannot let the right-wingers take over our courts. If we do, it won't matter if we get Bush out of the White House or if we take back the House or Senate. If they get these judges on the bench, these are LIFETIME appointments and some of these nominees are pretty young and could be around for a couple of decades.

So please keep emailing your senators, even those who you know won't support the filibuster or god forbid are republicans. We cannot stop now!!!!

Even Log Cabin Republicans oppose Pryor!

Spector is especially important because folks are thinking he might cave and vote against Pryor in committee, which will save us the hassle of filibuster his ass on the floor!!!

7. Specter is too weak
I think that he originally had concerns so he held it up and that is why there hasn't been a vote yet. But, I doubt that Hatch would have a vote on Pryor unless he knew that he had the votes locked up.
