EU Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fell in 2005

A mild winter helped EU greenhouse gas emissions fall by 0.7 percent in 2005, the European Commission said Thursday.

Households and services used less power for heating, electricity providers shifted away from coal and road transport emissions also went down in a year of slow economic growth for most of the region.

The 15 countries that made up the EU before the bloc's expansion in 2004 have promised to cut emissions by 8 percent below 1990 levels by 2012 - a target that will likely be more difficult to meet now that the economy is improving.

In 2005, emissions in those countries were just 2 percent below 1990 levels.
